POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lead Carpenter, under the direction of the Project Manager, is responsible for assisting in the construction, installation, and repair of structures and fixtures of wood, plywood and wallboard, estimates amount of materials needed for projects, enforces company policy and safety regulations, examines blueprints, determines dimensions, layouts of floor plans, cabinet work, selects materials for structural unit such as lumber, doors, cabinets, and paneling.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
- Supervises and coordinates workers engaged in construction, installation, and repair of wooden structures and fixtures.
- Assists carpenters and laborers with building concrete forms, erecting wooden frame work and laying flooring.
- Installs doors, builds stairs and lays hardwood floors.
- Informs and updates Project Manager on project timeline, project progress and material orders and materials received.
- Supervises the work activities of the carpenters and laborers while on the job-site and determines the sequence of activities concerned with fabrication, assembly and erection of structures.
- Coordinates work activities with contractors and sub-contractors.
- Transports workers to job sites in various cities and meets with vendors for the materials needed for the project.
- Follows company safety rules and regulations.

- Assists in project costing.
- All other job-related duties as assigned.
CONTACTS:
Immediate peers, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, customers and outside vendors/service providers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position lifts objects over 100 pounds with team or dual lifting and frequent lifting/carrying of more than 50 pounds. Physical Factors include constant standing, walking, carrying, lifting, pushing and pulling of 100 plus pounds, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, manual handling, hearing, smelling, near, midrange, far vision, depth perception, color vision, field of vision and bending; frequent driving and sitting. Working conditions include constant exposure to weather, noise and vibration and frequent air quality. Tasks may be conducted during periods of inclement weather including extreme cold, heat and humidity. Potential hazards include frequent exposure to equipment; and occasional electric shock, high exposed places, chemicals, insecticides, pesticides and infectious exposure. Protective equipment and clothing needed to perform the job includes steel toe boots, safety glasses and hard hats. Tvek suits, disposable boots, dust masks, and full air respirators must be used when working on projects that may present a hazard of infectious exposure.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience: Four years of experience in carpentry field required.
Certification/License: Must have valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be proficient in reading blue prints and specifications. Must have basic math skills. Must have good organizational skills. Must have extensive working knowledge of construction and remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, quality and cost control, safety and applicable building codes. Must be able to organize progress of multiple job sites and employees. Must be able to quickly identify potential conflicts and generate modifications. Must be a self starter. Must be able to supervise and direct workers. Must be able to handle physically demanding situations. Must be on call and available for emergency calls on rare occasions. Native American preferred.
