Graduate Traffic Engineer Plat Review

Position Overview:

This position is in Traffic Engineering as a member of a team of engineers, engineers-in-training, and project managers. The primary role of the Graduate Traffic Engineer - Plat Review is to assist in the review and management of plat reviews for Harris County.

Job Duties:

  • Review plats for compliance with the traffic engineering requirements of the City of Houston's (COH) Code of Ordinance Chapter 42 and Harris County regulations.
  • Advise and assist the Traffic Engineer - Plat Review on the COH Planning Commission with regards to variance requests and general platting issues.
  • Coordinate and effectively communicate platting issues with management, Harris County and COH elected officials and representatives, developers, consultants, and the public, as necessary.
  • Assist with recovery efforts following local disasters to ensure Harris County has safe infrastructure following the event.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an EAC/ABET-accredited program in the United States or Board-designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET;

or

  • A Board-approved combination of a Bachelor's degree in one of the mathematical, physical, or engineering sciences and a graduate degree in engineering from a university with an EAC/ABET-accredited undergraduate program in the same discipline of engineering;

or

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering technology from a TAC/ABET-accredited program;

or

  • A Bachelor's or graduate degree in mathematical, physical, or engineering science approved by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.

Knowledge, Skill & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to deal tactfully with a diverse group of people in a professional manner in a complex organization.
  • Ability to read and comprehend engineering documents and studies.
  • A valid Texas drivers license is required, and the ability to drive a County vehicle to various job sites as necessary.

Preferences

Education:

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.

Experience:

  • 1 year of professional experience in transportation engineering design, including roadway geometric design and/or traffic engineering.

Knowledge, Skill & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Working knowledge of Harris County regulations, standards, and details.
  • Working knowledge of the City of Houston Code of Ordinance Chapter 42.
  • Experience coordinating with external agencies (e.g., COH, TxDOT, etc.).
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
General Information

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
Full-Time | Regular | 40 hours per week.
Subject to early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays at times, depending upon the project or workload.

Salary:
Commensurate with experience, based on 26 pay periods.

Physical Demands and Environmental Exposure:
This position requires bending, stooping, and lifting up to 25 pounds, as well as frequent walking, standing, sitting, reaching, and ascending and descending stairs.
