Crew Leader-Heavy Equipment Operator

This position is responsible for the safe operation of heavy equipment and leading small, task-specific work crews in the safe performance of assigned work for various operations, maintenance and construction projects of the Public Works Department including: street and drainage system construction and maintenance, water and wastewater system construction, maintenance and operations, stormwater system maintenance and compliance, parks maintenance, and right-of-way management. This position receives formal supervision and evaluation from the Public Works Superintendent.

Qualifications:

Knowledge: Must possess functional knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, to include, but not limited to, heavy equipment, and the materials commonly used in construction, maintenance and repair activities related to public works and utilities; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety standards and practices applicable to work performed in public works and utilities fields; working knowledge of the utilization and care of materials, tools, and equipment used.

Ability to: Operate heavy and light equipment, and a variety of hand tools, power tools and equipment used in public works and utilities projects; understand and follow oral and written instructions; observe proper safety precautions; perform light to medium manual tasks under varying weather conditions; respond to emergencies and 24-hour shift requirements for calls-in from/during off-duty hours; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, coworkers, and the public.

Education: High school graduate or GED is required.

Experience: Minimum of four years of experience in heavy equipment operation, and leading work crews in road construction, public works, and utilities installation and repair.
