Qualifications:
College hours, high school diploma or GED
Three years mechanical experience (or heavy-duty tire work) in vehicle repair and/or other related experience
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements
School Bus Driver Certification or able to obtain with six months of hire date
Able to understand and execute verbal and written orders and to work productively without continual supervision
Some formal training in vehicle repair (preferred)
Provide guidance and training for Tire Mechanics
Pass annual physical in accordance with state law
Negative result on drug and/or alcohol tests administered as pre-employment, random, post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion basis, in accordance with federal law and district policy
Able to read and interpret maps and routes
Able to climb in and out of all school bus emergency exits
Basic tools of the trade to be provided by employee
Primary Purpose:
Capable of making mechanical repairs to the district’s fleet. Help provide for a safe and reliable vehicle for the transport of students and employees of KISD. Safely drive students to and from school on a schedule assigned by the Transportation Department. Safely transport students and staff to and from district sanctioned activities. Always act in the best interest of the district, the students and the community.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Able to effect minor repairs, i.e., hoses, belts, bulbs, etc., as it concerns the PM schedule.
- Able to perform general lubrication, change filters, etc.
- Mount and balance heavy (truck, bus, and semitrailer tires) and light (auto) tires.
- Able to inspect and replace the fleet’s tires/wheels.
- Mount and balance heavy (truck, bus, tractor-trailer tires) and light (auto) duty tires/wheels.
- Maintain accurate and current records concerning tire use (preventative maintenance).
- Maintain a fleet tire inventory for emergency use.
- Keep current with new and emerging tire and/or wheel technologies and provide training for Tire Mechanics.
- Responsible for upkeep, repair, replacement and protection of personal tools, Certain large tools and equipment are supplied by the district.
- Operate any Katy ISD school bus and related equipment in a safe and efficient manner while following all traffic laws, district policies, district regulations and Transportation Department regulations.
- Supervise and prioritize installation and rotation schedules
- Other duties as assigned.
Equipment Used:
Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jacks, and lift equipment. School bus and district vehicles, two-way radios and telephones. School buses, emergency equipment (triangle reflectors, fire extinguisher, bodily fluids kit, etc.)
Working Conditions:
Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting (in excess of 100 pounds), carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Work outside and inside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts. Exposure to heat, dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, environmental allergens, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel. Prolonged driving and sitting. Frequent walking, standing, twisting, climbing stairs, stooping, bending, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension.
