Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

The purpose of this position is to perform a broad range of maintenance, construction, and repair of buildings and grounds, rest areas, pump stations, and reinforced PC concrete roadway structures throughout the seven (7) parishes located in District 04. Work may be performed in or out of doors in various weather conditions or at different heights, depending on the nature of each assignment. Work may also involve bending, stooping, lifting or climbing. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with minimal to no supervision on a daily basis. This position participates in the DOTD Structured Training Program as appropriate and attends all continuing education classes deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of the required task.

50% The Master Carpenter is a position that is to perform all general repairs to facilities, buildings, interiors, exteriors, all types of furniture, wooden items and fixtures, etc. Builds high quality bookcases, tables, lockers, cabinets, museum cases and fixtures. Sands finishes, refinishes, varnishes and stains all types of furniture and other finished articles of wood. Measures and precisely cuts a variety of artificial mate rails such as plastic, particle-board, Formica etc. Canes and upholsters furniture. Makes knives to produce special moldings and operates a planer, shaper, jointer, and work lathe, drill press, mortising, boring, and tensioning machines, jig saws, rip saws and cut-off saws. Installs and fits fine trim workaround lights, electrical fixtures, doors, windows and other outlets. Estimates time and material for carpentry projects to be completed. Inspects and approves work of contractual employee's. Lays out, surveys and constructs all manner of detailed carpentry projects from shop drawings or blue prints. Installs and repairs locks. Finishes high grade carpentry projects. Mortises doors and other construction related detailed work. Lays out and installs all types of floor tile including resilient tile. Estimates supplies needed for completion of specified projects. Provides guidance for subordinate Carpenters and trades personnel as needed. Keeps all types of records as required by supervisory personnel. Oversees apprentice training. Performs other duties as needed to insure the smooth flow of work within the job unit. Other work includes, but is not limited to repair, alterations or maintenance of buildings and all related structures, including, but not limited to, the inspection of buildings, grounds, and equipment to determine appropriate action needed for various types of repairs and/or maintenance work with little to no supervision and is expected to make daily decisions with little to no supervision. This position is also responsible for all carpentry work on buildings, interiors, exteriors, fixtures, cabinetry, windows, furniture, concrete forms, trim ceilings, partitions and any other carpentry type work that is needed. This also includes the forming, pouring of catch basins as well as other roadway draining structures and wrecking the forms of these structures.

30% The Master Carpenter position will also be required, to fit, cut, and fasten all types of wall covering with paneling, sheet rock, plywood, etc.

10% The Master Carpenter position will also be responsible to makes repairs to water and gas lines, installs various plumbing fixtures, and performs plumbing work as needed.

5% The Master Carpenter position will be required to make minor repairs to all equipment as needed for proper maintenance on all equipment. May make requisitions for supplies and materials, may estimate labor and materials and may train or aid in training new and lower level employees, as needed.

5% The Master Carpenter position may be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: Probational or Promotional

Work Schedule: Work hours are 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Thursday, off on Friday.

Compensation:

The starting salary for Carpenter is $19.67 hourly.

The starting salary for Carpenter Master is $21.05 hourly.
