Description

The City of Norfolk's Department of Public Works is seeking qualified applicants for an Equipment Operator II position in our Towing Division. The Equipment Operator II will be responsible for driving a forklift with a tow attachment. The position also includes assisting with customer service, auction vehicle release, and general maintenance of the tow yard. Assisting with all paperwork and preparation required for auctions, ensuring compliance with procedures, laws, and regulations. Organizing and staging vehicles in designated auction areas, also assisting with moving vehicles around the lot. Repair grounds and asphalt. Repairs and operates a variety of motorized and other equipment. Performs inspections and minor maintenance on equipment. Performs selected duties as needed.

Department Hiring Salary Range: $41,231 - $47,415.65

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Operates mowers, tractors, dump trucks, forklifts, and other motorized equipment. Maintains grounds by collecting and delivering trash containers, raking leaves, mixing, and applying chemicals, weed eating, trimming, performing general care of landscape, cleaning up site, removing snow, cutting grass, trimming trees, removing dead limbs, removing storm damage, cutting back weeds, picking up and removing litter, refuse and debris from vacant lots, sweeping yard area. Operates mowers, tractors, dump trucks, forklifts, and other motorized equipment.
  • Aids by checking yard areas for environmental hazards, reviewing safety issues involving personnel, equipment, and policies, loading materials for crews, setting up safety zones around the worksites, passing tools to complete jobs, delivering, and retrieving vehicles from garage for maintenance and repair. Performing emergency weather recovery such as de-icing and snow removal and storm debris removal.
  • Performs inspections and minor maintenance on equipment by lubricating equipment, changing mower blades, sharpening chain saws, checking and maintaining fluid levels, adjusting tension levels, changing oil and filters, and performing repairs.
  • Inventorying cars, keeping logs and records, preparing reports, filling out material requisitions, communicating with customers on site.
  • Responds to emergencies by removing storm damage debris.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Two years operating heavy equipment or successful completion of a City apprenticeship program.

Additional Information & Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Forklift Operation Experience or certification preferred

Working Hours: Sunday-Thursday, 9:00am-5:30pm, 40 hours per week

  • Retirement

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
