The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking a skilled Transportation Engineer 2 in Union Gap, WA. This is an in-training opportunity that offers a career path, hands-on learning, and mentorship and allows you to progress upward through the Transportation Engineer series and achieve the goal class of a Transportation Engineer 2. This position is required to perform skilled engineering tasks in support of the WSDOT Design Project Engineering Office based in Union Gap. The office functions primarily in a remote capacity, with occasional in-office and fieldwork required. This position is responsible for preparing plans, specifications and estimate packages for projects assigned to this dynamic design team.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, Transportation Engineer 2 will:

  • Calculate and check calculations of quantities
  • Prepare cost estimates
  • Prepare contract provisions including writing special provisions
  • Coordinate with specialty groups, Operate OpenRoads, InRoads and Microstation to create computer-aided engineering deliverables.
  • Prepare preliminary design and construction schedules.
  • Coordinate with a team of technicians, interns, and/or consultants to prepare deliverables needed for projects to meet establishes milestone dates.
  • Review work of team members for completeness and accuracy.
  • Create and/or assist with the development and management of design schedules to aid in delivering projects on time.

Qualifications

To be considered for the TE 1 level, the following are required :

  • A Bachelors Degree with major study in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering or closely related field.

OR

  • Certification as an Engineer -in-Training (EIT)

To be considered for the TE 2 level, the following are required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering or a closely related field and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent entry level engineering experience in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation or a closely related field.

OR

  • Certification as an EIT and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent entry level engineering experience in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation or a closely related field.

OR

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent entry level engineering experience in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, transportation or a closely related field.

OR

  • A Masters degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation or a closely related field.

In addition (applies to both levels):

  • Possess a valid drivers license.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with contractors, designers, other team members, support offices, and the public.
  • The ability to manipulate and transport up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to convey ideas and facts orally and in writing to team members, supervisors, support groups and the public.
  • Basic knowledge of transportation engineering principles and scheduling.
  • The ability to read, interpret, understand, review, and produce contract plans, specifications, and estimates.
  • The ability to work outside in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, and work in confined spaces.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with computer technology, including knowledge of engineering and computer aided drafting software applications.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Certification as an Engineer In Training (EIT) or a bachelors degree in civil or structural engineering
  • Knowledge and experience with exposure to design, construction, traffic, materials, program management or other related fields.
  • Advanced experience with computer software such as Microstation (CADD) InRoads/OpenRoads, P6, Microsoft PowerPoint, Word AND Excel.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable . Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in of the Washington Administrative Code.
  • This position includes an approved in-training plan; therefore, it may be filled at the Transportation Engineer 1 or 2 level. The salaries for these classifications are as follows:
    Transportation Engineer 1: $64,776 - $87,048 annually depending on qualifications.
    Transportation Engineer 2: $71,472 - $96,144 annually depending on qualifications.
