University Facility Services is seeking a skilled and dependable General Maintenance Mechanic (GMM) to join our team. This role is responsible for the repair and upkeep of campus buildings, including mechanical systems, plumbing, electrical fixtures, and structural components.

General Maintenance Mechanics serve as the first line of response for facility-related issues. When a repair is needed, GMMs assess the issue, perform immediate fixes when possible, or coordinate with on-call specialists for more complex needs. This position focuses exclusively on physical facility maintenance and does not include IT-related tasks.

This position requires the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides general maintenance and repair work on heating/cooling and ventilation equipment such as exhaust fans, air handlers, cooling and heating coils, air filters, evaporative coolers, air compressors, vacuum pumps, electric motors, bearings, and all types of pumps.
  • Provides preventive maintenance activities, diagnoses malfunctions of mechanical equipment.
  • Maintains records of repairs and equipment requiring future service.
  • Uses power and hand tools to perform repair and maintenance work.
  • Requires working on roofs, in attics, and on ladders in extreme temperatures.
  • Operates forklifts, dollies, and other basic loading and unloading equipment as required.
  • Drives trucks to transport materials such as supplies or equipment as required.
  • Services equipment by oiling, greasing, and adding gas as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of repair, maintenance and installation techniques.
  • Ability to read and understand schematics.
  • Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of hand and power tools used in general maintenance.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting/transporting up to 50 lbs.
  • Physical stamina to stand for most of a shift.

Work Environment:

  • Outdoor Environment: Employees work outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions.
  • Extreme Heat: Temperatures above 100 degrees for more than an hour.
  • Noise: There is sufficient noise to cause you to shout in order to be heard above the noise level.
  • Vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements of extremities or whole body.
  • Hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals in a work setting.
  • Oils: There is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids.
  • Atmospheric Conditions: Conditions that affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
  • Close Quarters: Employees are frequently required to work in crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, sewage and water line pipes, and other areas that could cause claustrophobia.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of a high school education or an equivalent combination of apprenticeship program, technical training, and/or experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy .
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous work experience in a college/university setting.
