University Facility Services is seeking a highly skilled Lead Welder to serve as the expert in overseeing welding operations. This role involves supervising a team of welders in the fabrication, assembly, and repair of metal structures and components. Duties & Responsibilities

Welding Operations:

  • Perform advanced welding using techniques such as MIG, TIG, Stick, or flux-core on a variety of metals (steel, aluminum, stainless, etc.).
  • Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and welding specifications.
  • Ensure welds meet structural codes and quality standards.
  • Operate cutting, grinding, and fabrication tools safely and effectively.

Quality Control:

  • Inspect welds and finished products to ensure compliance with standards (e.g., AWS, ASME).
  • Maintain safety compliance and enforce workplace safety rules.
  • Identify defects and recommend corrective actions or process improvements.
  • Maintain welding certifications and help ensure team certifications are current.

Customer Service and Monitor Team:

  • Lead and mentor a team of welders and fabricators.
  • Assign tasks and monitor progress to meet project deadlines.
  • Train new welders on techniques, safety protocols, and company procedures.
  • Promote continuous improvement and skill development. Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and other departments.
  • Help plan and schedule welding activities for efficiency.
  • Excellent customer service skills to ensure other parties are informed and problems are resolved in a timely manner.

Equipment Maintenance:

  • Maintain and troubleshoot welding equipment.
  • Ensure tools and machines are in proper working condition and implement a preventative maintenance schedule.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of various welding processes (MIG, TIG, Stick, flux-core).
  • Knowledge of welding codes and standards (AWS, ASME).
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints, weld symbols, and fabrication drawings.
  • Advanced knowledge of metallurgy and material compatibility.
  • Familiarity with occupational safety and health standards (OSHA).
  • Understanding of quality control inspection methods and NDT practices.
  • High-level welding and fabrication skills across multiple processes.
  • Strong leadership and team coordination abilities.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Skilled in using hand tools, measuring instruments, and welding machinery.
  • Ability to train, coach, and assess team performance.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality work.
  • Capable of adapting to different projects, materials, and schedules.
  • Demonstrated ability to enforce and model safety practices.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting, bending, climbing, and working in various positions for extended periods.
  • Ability to move/transport up to a maximum of 50 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • In addition to the education and experience minimum qualifications, Apprenticeship program and/or technical training experience required.
  • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy .
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a university or college setting.
