Engineering Technician

Under direct supervision of the City Engineer or a Senior Civil Engineer, performs technical paraprofessional engineering support in project design, traffic studies, and review of private and public construction plans and specifications in conformance with City Codes and engineering standards, and assists with traffic control planning and construction inspection of public and private projects in public rights-of-way.

FLSA status: Non Exempt.

  • Design, draft, and prepare public works construction plans and specifications for airport, streets, facilities, water, sewer, and traffic signal infrastructure projects;
  • Prepare and maintain Drafting Standards for design uniformity.
  • Prepare and maintain Design Construction Standards
  • Prepare and maintain Project General Notes.
  • Prepare project design reports outlining options for design and respective costs of the construction;
  • Organize traffic counts, perform traffic studies, and prepare recommendations to the Traffic Safety Committee related to traffic engineering inquiries;
  • Maintain the database of the Roadway Condition Inventory (e.g. MicroPAVER® and IMS systems);
  • Research land records and review legal descriptions
  • Review traffic control plans for construction and special events;
  • Answer public and Council inquiries regarding City projects and other engineering-related situations;
  • Provide technical support in the review of subdivision plats, site plans, public improvement construction plans, specifications, and reports for compliance with City Codes, ADEQ regulations, and standard engineering practices;
  • Serve as a Liaison between the Engineers and Drafting Technicians in aiding to review and set up sheets for construction plans;
  • Create and Maintain As-built and legal records in GIS/AVEC, and
  • Assist with other engineering and project management duties.

Qualifications:
An Associates Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or a closely related field and five(5) years of sub-professional civil engineering experience OR High School Diploma/ GED AND a Minimum of ten (10) years sub-professional civil engineering experience that includes at least two (2) years' experience utilizing AutoCAD in Civil Engineering Design.

Experience with Autodesk Civil 3D, Board Drafting, ArcMap, and/or AVEC is highly desired.
Must have a valid, Arizona driver's license.

*Degree must be from an institution accredited as recognized by the U.S Department of Education as indicated in the Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.
