Were currently recruiting for a Building Inspector I/II/III. The primary responsibilities for the job are to perform professional and technical level work in the building inspection field. Perform field inspections of construction work during various stages of building construction to verify conformance with approved plans and construction documents, and compliance with applicable city/state building codes and regulations. Assist contractors, architects, engineers, and property owners with technical aspects of construction codes and the inspection process. Accurately and timely document deficiencies regarding building construction, and action required to gain final approval.
This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt union position. This position is covered under the provisions of an agreement between the City and the Plumbers and Steamfitters union.

Essential Functions:
- Inspect structures and buildings such as industrial, commercial, and residential buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations; including inspections of structural, life safety, mechanical, plumbing, energy efficiency, accessibility, site work, and other site development related work. Inspect existing occupancies for change of use, occupancy, or compliance
- with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Enter inspection results and notes in permit tracking system. Maintain records and reports relating to inspections performed.
- Prepare and issue Correction Notices where work does not conform to approved plans or comply with applicable codes and regulations.
- Assist plan review team by providing field information and performing backup and specialty plan reviews on an as-assigned basis.
- Drive assigned city vehicles in a safe and appropriate manner in order to travel efficiently between various assigned worksites.
- Attend project meetings with staff, contractors, architects, building owners to explain inspection requirements and process.
- Coordinate inspection activities with plans examiners, Fire Marshals Office and other city departments.
- Issue field occupancy approvals for minor projects; where projects meet permitting and inspection requirements.
- Inspections performed by level I inspector may be limited in scope based on inspector's qualifications.
Experience and Education
Experience
- Level I: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at an appropriate level for successful job performance, supplemented by training in the building trades or inspection; and at least two (2) of experience in building construction.
- Level II: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at appropriate level for successful job performance, supplemented by training in the building trades or inspection; and at least two (2) experience in building construction or one (1) year experience as building inspector.
- Level III: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at an appropriate level for successful job performance, supplemented by training in the building trades or inspection; and at least two (2) of experience as Building Inspector II.
Education
- Equivalent to a HS Diploma/GED
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Computer Skills
- Basic skills in permit and inspection tracking database systems; experience preferred with Hansen, Project DOX, GIS and Hummingbird;
- Basic skills in electronic review software
- Basic skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Required Licenses and/or Certifications
Possession of:
- Level I: Possession of appropriate valid driver's license.
- Level II: Possession of appropriate valid drivers license; and ICC certification in at least one building inspection area.
- Level III: Possession of appropriate valid drivers license; and ICC certification in at least two and distinct building inspection areas (such as building and mechanical).
Knowledge
- International Building, Residential, Fire, Mechanical Codes, Uniform Plumbing Code, National Electrical Code, and related amendments and ordinances of State of Washington and City of Vancouver.
- National and industry standards and specifications for materials of construction and their proper use.
- Operation, services, and activities of the building department and code enforcement process.
- Legal and administrative principles and techniques of permitting, building inspection and plan review process.
- Principles of structural design, and engineering mathematics.
- Pertinent federal, state and local laws that pertain to building construction.
- Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
- Use of personal computers and basic software.
