The Mission Systems Environmental Effects Engineering team at Collins Aerospace is looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our staff. This position will be responsible for supporting the multidisciplinary environment across different strategic business units within the company through product requirements capture, design and qualification test.
This position is for a Senior Electrical Engineer with analog and digital design experience. The position will be responsible for requirements capture, component assessment, PCB design, circuit board buildup, test software support, component characterization testing, and test plan/report generation. Efforts are typically to support nuclear radiation characterization testing of circuit card assemblies (CCA) for radio and display systems. Products are typically required to comply with various military standards including MIL-STD-461.
In this role, you will be a key contributor to nuclear effect-related activities, working with a team of experienced nuclear survivability engineers for assigned projects and delivering comprehensive support from the design phase through qualification. You will advise on risk mitigation strategies, including parts selection and circuit design optimization. Your responsibilities will include leading testing efforts in specialized environments such as Total Ionizing Dose, Neutron Displacement Damage, Ionizing Dose Rate, and Neutron Single Event Effects. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate and qualify products and subsystems of moderate to high complexity. Additionally, you will manage documentation, including preparing and reviewing nuclear test plans and reports while contributing to Preliminary and Critical Design Reviews.
Beyond technical duties, you will utilize strong communication skills to support production services, communicate technical results, present findings to customers and mid-level managers, and coordinate with departments such as Business Development, Finance, and Operations. This position requires you to independently handle multiple projects and tasks.
This is an onsite position based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Relocation assistance may be available.
What YOU Will Do:
- Collaborate with a multi-discipline team of Engineers to develop proven hardware designs that meet system performance and operational specifications.
- Lead and perform circuit card design lifecycle activities to include Requirements capture, Schematic capture, Design documentation, Signal integrity analysis, Creation of board stack-up and routing instructions, Coordination and review of printed wiring board layout, Test board population (e.g. Soldering), Test board trouleshootng, Creation and execution of test plans and reports, Root cause analysis and Integration.
- Design, document, test and troubleshoot digital and analog hardware for products using electrical engineering principles and techniques. Designs may include the use of FPGAs, processors, and DDR memory components, and industry interfaces, such as Ethernet, I2C, SPI, USB, and RS-232.
- Conduct qualification testing alongside a team of nuclear engineers for total ionizing dose, neutron interactions, dose-rate, proton interactions, and heavy-ion environments.
- Travel 20% of the time

Qualifications YOU Must Have:
- U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
- The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
- BS in Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics or related field
- Circuit board design experience including experience with schematic capture tools and PCB layout supervision and guidance to board designers
Qualifications WE Prefer:
- A digital design background with some RF experience is preferred
- Be capable of hands-on troubleshooting using engineering lab equipment (oscilloscopes, signal generators, etc....)
- Ability to read/understand electronic schematics
- Ability to statistically reduce test data
- Possess excellent communication skills, including the ability to write technical material and present to customers and mid-level managers
- Be self-directed, able to meet cost, schedule, and performance objectives with minimal oversight
This position is part of a larger team that performs a variety of TEMPEST, Nuclear, Electromagnetic Compatibility/Interference (EMC/EMI) and Power Input qualification testing of Company products and programs to various military and commercial industry standards.
The Environmental Effects Engineering (EEE) lab is a world-class, full-service, 18,000 sq ft (and growing) Environmental Qualification Test Lab located in Cedar Rapids, IA capable of creating nearly any environment required in the avionics industry. The salary range for this role is 82,000 USD - 164,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
