The Department of Public Utilities provides quality water and sanitary sewer services to Virginia Beach residents. Become a part of our dedicated workforce who provide these essential services. We are currently hiring for a Utility Mechanic I position within our Water Distribution team.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PUBLIC UTILITIES, OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE: Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, standby and overtime when required to meet operational needs. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status. This position may require incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee's supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.

Job Duties for Utility Mechanic I include but are not limited to:

  • Perform manual labor such as hand excavation and movement of heavy items in connection with the construction, maintenance, and repair of water lines and mains
  • Display knowledge and proper use of basic hand tools, common maintenance and manual labor tasks and the use of associated tools
  • Assist in diagnosis of utility problems, follow work orders, and prioritize tasks to accomplish repairs in a safe, efficient manner
  • Operate City-owned motor vehicles
  • Introductory knowledge of operation of heavy construction equipment (backhoes, trenchers, excavators)
  • Maintain personal protective equipment
  • Ability to lift without assistance, heavy articles that weigh approximately 50 pounds
  • Understand written and verbal directions and instructions
  • Assist crew members in loading and unloading materials and equipment
  • May assist Crew Leader on occasion to enter or research data on a laptop or tablet in the field
  • Other tasks/duties as assigned

Selected candidates not already possessing a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) MUST be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License Instruction Permit within six (6) months of employment and then obtain a full CDL license with air brake and tanker endorsements with nine (9) months of employment. - upon completion of CDL with endorsements, a $4,000.00 stipend ($153.85 per pay period - every two weeks) will be added to your pay. If you possess a Class B CDL, and you are offered a position we will assist you in completing the upgrade courses and skills test after time of hire.
