BRIEF DESCRIPTION

This is a supervisory position with duties that include directing Sports Complex personnel, determining work schedules, keeping records and reports of department activities and operating machinery in the performance of maintenance tasks. Subject to after hour call outs for emergency situations. Will be required to work with staff of other divisions of the Parks and Recreation Department as well as staff of other City Departments. Other duties as assigned.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of the safe operation of equipment used and/or the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle code pertaining to the operation of vehicles and equipment
  • Thorough knowledge of best practices for turfgrass nutrient management and cultivation.
  • Sufficient knowledge of technical skills related to the work of park and athletic field maintenance
  • Sufficient skills to operate and train others to operate equipment effectively and safely
  • Ability to service and make minor repairs to equipment and to know safety standards to prevent hazards
  • Ability to supervise, manage and delegate subordinate employees through effective working relationships
  • Ability to deal with the general public, vendors and fellow employees efficiently and effectively
  • Ability to review, interpret, and analyze data to make sound, knowledgeable decisions and effective recommendations
  • General knowledge of the principles of Integrated Pest Management
  • General knowledge of municipal purchasing, operations and procedures

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school graduate or equivalent and a minimum of three (3) years of directly related experience in parks and athletic field maintenance;

One (1) to two (2) years of supervisory experience required;

Some college preferred; OR

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED

A Valid Class C Texas driver license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record

Ability to obtain a Texas Pesticide Applicators license within six (6) months of employment

Ability to obtain an Irrigation License within six (6) months of employment

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND SAFETY HAZARDS

Primarily in an outdoor environment with the ability to operate indoors when needed. May be exposed to extreme heat and cold during summer and winter months.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Standard office equipment including multi-line telephone, computer, fax machine, copier, scanner, printer, etc.

Pickups, dump bed trucks, zero turn mowers, reel mowers, top dressers, aerifiers, field striping equipment, backhoe loader, skid steer loader, tractor, flex wing mower, bat wing mowers, push mower, utility vehicles, spray rig/applicator, spreader, air tools, chain saw, tree trimming tools, infield groomers, ABI Force, Dingo and attachments, string trimmer and small hand tools.
