JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for supervising and participating in the division's inspection activities.
REPORTS TO: The Inspection Services Administrator assigns work in terms of very general instructions.
- Oversees office and field inspection processes; supervises the work of field inspectors.
- Resolves conflicts between inspectors and contractors.
- Performs scheduled Certifiable of Occupancy inspections.
- Completes the condemnation process on unsafe structures.
- Evaluates inspectors performance and completes appraisal forms.
- Completes accident and injury reports.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) years experience in a related field.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems (ranging up to level III in all four trades).
- Possession of a valid driver's license with an active and consecutive 3-year verifiable driving history. Driving history will be checked. Must be able to be licensed in the state of North Carolina.
Possession of Level III Standard Certifications in Building, Plumbing, Electrical and Mechanical or the ability to obtain within 2 years.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Inspection Services Administrator assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include North Carolina building codes; subdivision and zoning ordinance; North Carolina General Statutes; and personnel policies. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied administrative, building inspection, and supervisory duties. Strict regulations contribute to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in the City's inspection services. Success in this position contributes to the enforcement of building codes.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, architects, engineers, surveyors, contractors, property owners, and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, motivate and influence persons, and justify or settle matters.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and distinguishes between shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices, such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has direct supervision over Multi-Trade Building Trades Inspector positions (6).
