Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking a Drainage Operations Senior Civil Engineer (Civil Engineer, Sr.) to take a leading role in managing and improving the performance of the citys drainage infrastructure.
As a key technical expert, youll help ensure SPUs drainage systems operate safely and efficiently, reducing flooding risks, improving water quality, and keeping us in compliance with regulatory requirements. Serve as subject matter expert for drainage infrastructure, supporting field crews and planners with operational troubleshooting and real-time system evaluations
Lead operational performance analysis of SPUs drainage systems to develop proactive maintenance strategies that reduce flooding and improve water quality
- Act as a key liaison between SPUs Drainage and Wastewater (DWW ) System Management Division, DWW Planning & Program Management Division, DWW System Maintenance Division, Utility Operations and Maintenance Division, Project Delivery and Engineering Branch and other divisions to ensure optimal drainage performance
Support field and office staff to plan and execute rehabilitation and maintenance projects in compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices
Education: Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology
AND Experience : Five (5) years of professional civil engineering experienceExperience/Education Equivalency : In lieu of a Bachelors Degree in an accredited program, four (4) additional years of civil engineering work experience under the supervision of a licensed engineer may be substituted. There is no equivalency for the PE license.
Desired Experience:
- Demonstrated experience implementing maintenance projects in compliance with regulatory requirements of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, and other regulatory agencies and stakeholders
- Technical expertise in open channel systems, water quality structures, detention facilities, and surface water ponds
- Proven ability to apply sound engineering judgment under pressure to develop recommendations and make real-time decisions
- Experience leading and supporting field crews, including real-time problem-solving during active rehabilitation and maintenance operations
- Skilled in collaborating with a diverse team of field and office personnel
License, Certification and Other Requirements:
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington
- Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
- This position is expected to work in the office or field 3-5 days per week
- Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites
- May be required to lift over 50 pounds
- May be required to stand, bend, or walk for extended periods of time
- May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays
This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Effective January 2025, City employees have the option to work remotely two days a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.

The full salary range for this position is: $72.38 - $84.28 Hourly
