POSITION TITLE: Carpenter
REPORTS TO: Director of Maintenance
POSITION SUMMARY: Performs duties to maintain, repair, manufacture and/or fabricate wood and related materials for utilization by teachers and students in the district.
FUNCTIONS OF THE JOBEssential Functions
- Performs carpentry duties including proper surface preparation, selection of the correct material fitting the task to be completed.
- Repairs doors, desks, broken tables and related classroom fixtures throughout District.
- Installs bulletin boards and chalkboards throughout District.
- Build bookcases, shelving and other related items to meet teacher and school
- Constructs and/or assembles graduation stages for student or other needs.
- Constructs steel and framing to build room partitions occasionally.
- Performs a variety of other miscellaneous carpentry duties as may be assigned.
- Performs all skilled carpentry duties in accordance with standard practices of the trade.
- Performs all carpentry and related duties in a conscientious and safe manner.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Maintains carpentry shop and ensures equipment is in good working order.
- Obtain materials and supplies for the assigned job as required.
- Cleans up after work is completed.
Physical/ Visual Activities or Demands: Physical/visual activities or demands that are commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
- Standing, walking, climbing, reaching, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing.
- Normal attention: with clarity of vision at 20 inches or less as well as 20 feet or more, depth perception, ability to adjust eye to bring object into focus, and a field of vision that can be seen up and down or right to left while fixed on point, all required.
- Moderate to heavy physical demand with regular lifting of light to average (5 to 60 ) items by hand and occasional lifting of heavy items (60 lbs. and over) with mechanical assistance.
Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions: Environmental and atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
Subject to both inside and outside working conditions: with exposure to noise sufficient to make it necessary to shout, working in proximity to moving mechanical parts and electrical current; some exposure to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases or poor ventilation, but with none present to the extent of being disagreeable; travel required between school locations.
POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education: Thorough knowledge of a specialized field such as building and carpentry skills, plus the application of basic theory. Equivalent to high school plus additional broad specialized training equal to two years of college.
Experience: Requires a minimum of one year up to and including three years of experience in carpentry and building work.
Skills and Abilities which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position:
- Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Dealing with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure. Perform the operations with like common and decimal fractions. Compute ratio, rate, and percent.
- Perform reading, writing, and speaking at a basic level.
Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position:
A variety of electric-powered and hand tools used in general carpentry.
