Position Summary

Skilled work in the operation of moderately complex public works or sanitation equipment. Duties include performance of manual laboring tasks.

Essential Functions

  • The employee will operate one or more of the following on a regular basis:

Trimmers, weed eaters, chainsaw, tractor with mower including other attachments, small dump truck, labor truck and other similar equipment with 2 axles, boom ax mower, light trucks, compactor or other similar equipment.

  • The employee maybe assigned to operate one or more of the following equipment and machines depending on project requirement:

Backhoe, bulldozer, track hoe, earth scraper, front-end loader, large trucks, boom truck, hydraulic excavators, motor grader, and/or other similar equipment.

  • Washes, cleans and gives routine first echelon maintenance to the equipment.
  • Performs manual laboring tasks as assigned such as pothole patching, shoulder repair, ditch cleaning, tree trimming, bridge repair, headwall construction and other duties.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Occasionally operates a pipe laser.
  • During emergencies, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 or more years of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of medium and heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Must have a valid Florida drivers license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Should have knowledge and skills of medium and heavy equipment operation or willing to be trained and acquire all necessary requirements to operate heavy equipment.
  • Should have knowledge of the component parts and maintenance needs of the equipment.
  • Should have knowledge of traffic regulations governing the use of equipment.
  • Should have knowledge of the occupational hazards involved.
  • Has the ability to service equipment.
  • Has the ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.
  • Skills in the operation of construction or sanitation equipment.
  • Has the ability to prepare simple reports and understand simple documentations such as load tickets, delivery receipts, timesheets etc.

Physical Requirements

Physical demand: Moderate

  • 50 lbs. maximum lifting.
  • Sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, lifting, and moving of approximately 50 lbs.
  • Physical strength and ability sufficient to operate equipment.
  • Physical strength and ability sufficient to operate equipment over rough terrain.
  • Ability to perform manual labor under adverse weather conditions.
