Overview & Responsibilities
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To supervise, plan, direct, and control the daily activities of both direct and indirect hourly employees. The individual supervisor is responsible for overseeing all activities of these groups in respect to their performance of assigned tasks.
Creates and executes daily work plans based on department priorities to ensure schedule adherence.
Supports the development and implementation of continuous improvement activities related to Pipe Shop, Packaging, and Shipping Operations including, but not limited to, establishing best practices, standard work instructions, job hazard analysis, safety culture and habits, and good housekeeping techniques.
NATURE OF THE JOB
This position directs personnel and capital resources to effectively manufacture custom designed products using the most cost effective, and timely methods, with the goal of the finished product being of the highest quality. The incumbent needs to have the ability to communicate to all levels of the organization both written and verbally. A solid understanding of engineered drawings and blueprints is must. Requires a working interpretation of all forms of manufacturing related transmittals such as work instructions, process specifications, special engineering instructions, etc. It is a must to possess the ability to motivate, mentor, provide technical direction, and respond to individual needs in many areas including safety.
This position is responsible for:
Planning the scope of work.
Preparing work schedules.
Providing the proper tools and information to employees related to their work assignments.
Enforce plant rules.
Administer the payroll system in Kronos.
Maintain all relative records within the various systems both manual and electronic.
Ensure safe work practices are adhered to at all times.
Maintain a clean and orderly workplace within the department.
Evaluate employee performance and work with individuals to develop work performance improvement plans as required.
Administer the labor contract in a fair and equitable manner.
Control costs associated with budgets including but not limited to material purchases, contracted services, and overtime.
Ensure that all work conducted meets current standards as defined by such Federal, State and Local regulatory agencies as OSHA, NEC, ASME, ANSI, DEP, EPA and others that may apply.
This position may be assigned to alternate shifts as necessary to carry out the departments objectives and tasks.
This position also requires frequent overtime.
CONTACT WITH OTHERS
This position is required to interact with all levels of personnel and departments within the company. The most frequent contacts are with the Area Managers, Production Manager, Central Planning Managers, Maintenance Supervisors, Product Engineers, Human Resources, Union Shop Stewards & Grievance Chairman, and Quality Assurance Personnel.
Some contact with Elliott Technical Services, customers, vendors, contractors, and service facilities. Occasional travel requirements to vendors or service facilities or to support training.
SUPERVISION
The incumbent is a supervisor, with direct responsibilities of the hourly workforce. It is required at times to be an individual contributor in the context of interpretation of job related duties and responsibilities. It is the supervisors responsibility to enforce plant rules of conduct and safety with the consequence of discipline and possible discharge of an employee in conjunction with the Human Resource Department.
SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/COMPETENCIES
Responsible for all activities pertaining to Pipe Shop, Packaging, and Shipping departmental operations. Directs and controls activities such as: shop floor manufacturing, execution of production schedules, quality, etc.
Devise motivational and developmental procedures for all subordinates to perform their assigned duties to the best of their abilities in a manner consistent with company goals.
Initiate methods to control efficiency levels of Pipe Shop, Packaging, and Shipping operations.
Take necessary action to ensure that products are produced at the lowest possible cost and in the shortest possible lead-time with the highest possible quality.
Create monitoring procedures to control scrap & rework costs. Manage coordinated efforts to eliminate the root cause of the quality problem through the Root Cause Corrective Action System and employee recommendations.
Assists Engineering in solving quality/manufacturing/design problems.
Initiate methods to monitor and control product costs of critical path component parts.
Initiate action steps to control progress billing milestones on an order-by-order assignment in support of Company cash flow financial plan.
Devise appropriate action plans to resolve labor problems fairly and continue to develop amicable union - management relationship.
Administers the Labor Contract, and Company Rules and policies.
Participates in development of plant layout changes for area of responsibility.
Administers a program of good housekeeping in all areas of responsibility, monitors safety problems and fosters a work safe environment.
Monitors and controls ISO 9001 and 14001 requirements in all areas of responsibility.
Participates in hiring and disciplinary procedures with bargaining personnel.
Responsible for preparing and implementing employee training programs.
BACKGROUND and EXPERIENCE
Background required includes technical education (seminars, undergraduate courses, etc.) in the field of manufacturing, welding, assembly, testing, machining, or rotating equipment field.
Experience with shipping, logistics, or warehousing activities is a plus.
Job experience should include a minimum of five years in a manufacturing position preferably in a Union environment.
Intermediate level computer literacy is required.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communication skills are also required.
