ABOUT THE POSITION
The Materials Inventory Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and managing inventory of raw materials, components, and supplies to ensure optimal stock levels, high accuracy, and continuous availability. This role plays a critical part in aligning inventory management with production schedules, quality standards, and cost-efficiency objectives. The supervisor ensures that materials are handled, stored, and tracked in a way that supports operational flow and minimizes disruption to manufacturing processes.
Key Activities & Responsibilities
- Monitor and manage raw materials, component, and supply inventories to maintain proper stock levels and availability
- Align inventory practices with production needs, quality standards, and cost-efficiency targets
- Oversee and resolve negative inventory reports, including timely counting and adjustments.
- Publish cycle count metrics: completion rate, accuracy, and gross dollar adjustments.
- Investigate all count variances outside of tolerance with root cause analysis and implement permanent corrective actions
- Collaborate with Supply Chain Management to ensure accurate physical inventories, including developing work instructions for auditing, tagging, and reconciliation.
- Focus root cause investigation on the top 20% of items driving 80% of inventory variances (Pareto approach)
- Maintain strong communication with buyers and production teams to ensure correct and timely material picks
- Supervise daily shipping, receiving, stocking, and material handling processes; ensure safe and timely execution
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); train warehouse personnel accordingly
- Ensure warehouse inventory is properly identified, located, and maintained with high accuracy
Key Deliverables
- Maintain 98%+ inventory accuracy through cycle count program oversight
- Conduct annual ABC analysis and ensure new parts are properly classified and incorporated into the cycle count schedule throughout the year
- Supervise staff across warehouse, material handling, and receiving functions.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation; report relevant data to stakeholders
- Order and manage warehouse operational supplies to support uninterrupted workflow
- Support the development and execution of strategic plans and process improvements related to inventory and material flow
To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are:
- High school diploma or GED required; bachelor's degree preferred
- 1-3 years of experience in materials or inventory management within a manufacturing environment
- Solid understanding of material flow, production support, and inventory control fundamentals.
- Familiarity with production planning, MRP, and ERP systems.
- Experience working with purchasing/procurement and manufacturing teams
- Ability to perform analysis and understand inventory-related financial impacts
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and deliver results under pressure
- Commitment to continuous improvement, adaptability, and a proactive mindset.
- Strong communication and documentation skills; attention to detail and accuracy
Supervisor and Leadership Expectations
Directly supervises 1-8 personnel which may include but is not limited to Cycle Counters, Material Handlers and shipping/receiving

Manufacturing Environment
Shop manufacturing environment exposures include exposure to moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools and equipment, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, motorized vehicles, welding, and machining operations, outside weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electric shock. The employee may occasionally be exposed to varying levels of dirt, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, very warm and/or very chilly temperatures. The noise level in the shop can be very loud at times consistent with an industrial assembly facility and may require hearing protection.
