Job Summary

The Construction Worker I will perform semi-skilled construction work. The Construction Worker I is responsible for assisting in the performance of general construction work, alteration, repair, and maintenance of building, floors, roofs, stairways, floors, windows, wood fixtures, and furniture.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills

  • Performs semi-skilled work in construction, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical duties in new and existing buildings.
  • Repairs various facilities, furniture, and fixtures including tables, chairs, benches, counters, and truck beds.
  • Operates a variety of powered and hand operated machinery and equipment to facilitate maintenance and repair of public facilities.
  • Assist in the construction of new buildings and remodeling of old buildings.
  • Reads blueprints and/or schematic drawings.
  • Performs related tasks as necessary.

Minimum Education & Experience

High school or GED, or sufficient education to read and write with vocational training in carpentry. One (1) year of experience.

Special Certifications & Licenses

Valid Texas Driver's License

Average judgement: must recognize and resolve problems, type of procedure to apply, whether there is a problem/malfunction with a piece of equipment that needs attention, etc.; may involve freedom in selection of work methods among approved routines, setting of priorities, or sequencing of tasks within established schedules.

General guidelines: occasionally requires interpretation of available options to apply to non-standard situations; day-to-day work drives priorities.

Physical Demands

Mostly moderate and fairly steady active physical exertion; may require brief periods of heavy muscular exertion, such as standing, lifting, moving, pulling, pushing, etc. Ability to exert up to 35-50 lbs. of force occasionally to move objects.

Responsibility for Equipment & Property

Responsible for assigned equipment/property used outside of office; responsible for handing out to and retrieving property/equipment from employees and keeping inventory; use of a City vehicle.

Working Conditions

Frequent travel associated with job; periodic situations that cause stress and tension in the execution of regular duties.
