Position Overview:Were looking for a dedicated professional engineer to join our team as a Senior Shoring and Landslide Engineer (under the City's classification title of Senior Civil Engineer). As part of our Street Use Division, youll focus on reviewing complex plans, handling inspections, and managing enforcement related to shoring, directional drilling, and slope stability. Additionally, youll play a critical role in landslide prevention and emergency response efforts. Youll collaborate with teams across SDOT, other city departments, and external agencies to ensure Seattle's right-of-way (ROW) is safe, stable, and well-maintained. The position will report to the Civil Engineering Supervisor who oversees the shoring and landslide team.
In this role, you will:
- Review and approve shoring and directional boring plans, ensuring everything meets standards for projects in the ROW.
- Conduct pre-construction meetings and oversee related inspections, ensuring compliance with approved designs.
- Collaborate with our Shoring Reviewers and the Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections (SDCI) to resolve project issues.
- Inspect active directional drilling or shoring activities, confirming credentials and ensuring proper procedures are followed.
- Develop and manage slope mitigation projects to address landslide risks or active instability issues in collaboration with property owners.
- Respond to landslide emergencies, assisting our Field Operations in assessing and stabilizing affected infrastructure.
- Use monitoring tools like King Countys GIS Emergency System and weather data to assess landslide risks and prepare the city.
- Share emergency standby engineering duties during Seattles landslide season, covering weekends and holidays as needed.
- Lead annual interdepartmental coordination meetings to prepare the city for potential landslides.
- Send regular landslide risk updates to city staff and officials during the landslide season.
- Maintain direct communication with property owners to address slope stability concerns and provide guidance.
- Act as a subject matter expert by reviewing technical plans, specifications, and proposals from other engineers and city departments.
- Foster excellent customer service by addressing complaints, inquiries, and project-related communication promptly.
- Supervise and prepare technical documents, reports, and related communication materials.
- Use software like Bluebeam and Accela for plan review and project tracking.

You must have:
- Five (5) or more years professional civil engineering experience;
- A Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology;
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington.
- Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
Youll be successful in this role if you have:
- A strong background in slope stability analysis, including hands-on experience with mitigation and emergency response.
- Proficiency with slope stability modeling tools.
- Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to prioritize in emergency situations.
- Effective communication skills to clearly convey technical information to diverse audiences.
- The ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.
- Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment with hybrid options. At this time, three (3) days in-office and two (2) days remotely.
- Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites.
- May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
- May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
- May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
- Overnight travel may be required.
