Job Description
PURPOSE SUMMARY. Operate a variety of heavy gas/diesel mobile equipment in transporting materials or in performing general construction and labor to build, repair and maintain roads in Dona Ana County.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES.
A safety sensitive position that performs a variety of construction/maintenance equipment operation, semi-skilled tasks and manual labor as assigned in the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges and drainage structures.
Operate a variety of trucks and equipment that are classified as heavy equipment (Class A CDL) in accordance with the New Mexico Department of Transportation, including but not limited to; motor-grader, water pull, scraper, dozer, transport tractor, 3-5 yd. loader, semi-tractor end dump, excavator, vacuum truck, street sweeper, etc., exercising all safety regulations and procedures.
Check grades on roadway utilizing a level and established elevations.
Read and interpret plans for construction.
Maintain grades and cut/fill stakes in accordance with specific instructions and/or plans specifications.
Maintain streets, culverts and drainage ways; observes inspects, and monitors conditions.
Complete required daily logs and reports and submits the information to the assigned Foreman describing tasks performed and materials used to include but not limited to, tons of material removed from water systems, miles of road swept, number and size of culverts cleaned and miles graded.
Haul materials and transport vehicles and equipment to job sites using various trucks and equipment.
Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance work on assigned equipment; identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair to the assigned supervisor.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES. Performs other duties as assigned or required. The duties listed above are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. May be required to work irregular hours during emergency situations, occasional overtime and may be required to be on-call or subject to emergency call-out.
QUALIFICATIONS.
A. Education. High School Diploma or GED required.
B. Experience. Four (4) years full time experience in a general construction environment, of which at least two years in heavy equipment operations.
C. Education/Experience substitution. In accordance with County Policy.
D. Licenses/Certifications. Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A required, Endorsements (H, T, P, N, X) preferred; Traffic Control Certification is desirable.
E. Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, drivers license record, etc.). Background check, pre-employment drug and alcohol test, and driving record check. Must comply with the drug and alcohol Clearinghouse requirements in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge: Construction plans; Safety regulations (OSHA); Traffic laws pertinent to operation of equipment performing road construction, repairs and maintenance. Knowing and abiding by all department and county policies and procedures.
Skills: Perform minor preventative maintenance on assigned equipment; safely use a variety of tools and equipment related to road construction repairs. Skill, acquired through considerable training and experience, to operate and adjust varied equipment for purposes such as performing road construction/maintenance.
Abilities: Effectively communicate in oral and/or written form. Understand, interpret and carry out oral and written instructions; read gauges on equipment and be able to operate equipment effectively. Maintain and wear personal protective equipment as necessary. Establish and maintain a working relationship with employees and the public; use good judgment; maintain daily reports.
Compensation Range
$16.81 - $27.04
