This advertisement is to create a list that will be used to fill Facilities Maintenance Mechanic vacancies for the City of Tacoma and Tacoma Public Utilites for a period of one year.

Facilities Maintenance Mechanics perform a wide variety of skilled maintenance and repair duties involving building systems such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, locksmithing, and other trades for assigned facilities. Duties require mechanical aptitude, and an employee must be willing and able to perform manual labor in multiple facilities under all types of weather conditions.

Facility types include Administrative, Police, Fire, Public Works, Community Centers as well as various Utility buildings.

The Ideal Candidate:
Our ideal candidate will be a highly skilled, safety conscious, punctual team player with a high work ethic. Candidate must be self-motivated and able to work both individually and with a team. The ideal candidate will provide great customer service and have a positive attitude while practicing good stewardship.

An equivalent combination to: graduation from high school or vocational school and two years' journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of commercial mechanical systems, including complex heating, ventilating, air conditioning systems and other related systems.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid Washington State Driver's License at time of appointment, with maintenance thereafter
Low Pressure Boiler Operator's License
EPA Certification Type I and Type II

Positions assigned to the Tacoma Police Department may require additional background checks which may include fingerprinting and/or a polygraph test.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

This position requires lifting, climbing, working in poorly illuminated and confined work areas and from heights.

  • Methods, materials and tools used for the mechanical repair and maintenance of buildings and related equipment
  • Detection and repair of a variety of building defects and equipment failures
  • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies
  • Technical aspects of field of specialty
  • Record-keeping techniques
  • Health and safety regulations
  • Requirements of maintaining buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition
SKILLS
  • Perform a wide variety of skilled maintenance duties involving electrical, locksmithing, HVAC, plumbing and other trades
  • Perform building maintenance duties utilizing a variety of tools and machines used in the trades
  • Work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches
  • Operate a variety of welding equipment
  • Lift object weighing up to 75 pounds
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
