General Definition of Work

The carpenter, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion related to a variety of skilled carpentry work involved in the fabrication, installation, replacement, and repair of wood structures and components in buildings and facilities. Employee performs both school-based and district-level work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Carpentry Supervisor.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Perform a full range of carpentry work including structural, fabrication, installation, repair, and maintenance tasks involved in repair, remodeling, and new construction projects
  • Repair and replace ceiling tiles; lay a variety of floors including wood, vinyl composite tile (VCT), and sheet vinyl
  • Install or repair glass entrance doors or windows as needed
  • Alter, repair, and construct wooden fixtures such as partitions, counters, doors, window frames, sheds, scaffolds, forms and fences
  • Maintain integrity of building structures; repair stairway flooring, built-in bookcases, and restroom hardware
  • Break up, dig out, and patch existing concrete structures for repair and reconstruction; repair brick and concrete block walls and structures
  • Maintain and operate a variety of tools including drills, routers, power saws, and other woodworking machinery; sharpen hand tools and ensure that tools and equipment are properly maintained
  • Construct and repair classroom and office furniture, equipment, and fixtures
  • Assist in maintaining accurate records of labor, materials, and costs
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of the full range of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations and codes applicable to the construction, installation and repair of buildings and facilities
  • Knowledge of proper use and care of carpentry tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of safe work practices
  • Skilled in carpentry work involved in the repair, remodeling, and construction of buildings and fixtures
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of carpentry tools and equipment
  • Ability to read blueprints and work from plans, diagrams, and specifications
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and perform heavy manual labor
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. Ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Education and Experience

  • One (1) year of experience performing skilled carpentry work required
  • Ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance required
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
