Job Purpose

The Advanced Engineer, Electrical plays a pivotal role in supporting the advancement of the electrical system for our generator technology at our R&D division in Cincinnati, Ohio. As part of our dynamic team, the Advanced Engineer, Electrical will own, lead and develop the main distribution component of our next generation HV System.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement cutting-edge power electronics circuits to support power distribution through the KARNO generator
  • Work in a lab environment with hands-on build and development support of system prototypes.
  • Detailed design of electrical system schematics, wiring harnesses, custom circuit hardware and control modules.
  • Own the analysis, design, simulation and testing of HV electronic circuits.
  • Identification and support of strategic suppliers to complete critical component designs and procurement.
  • Development of safety-critical documentation including FMEAs and DVP&Rs.
  • Cost model development and leading cost reduction initiatives.
  • Responsible for safety and material compliance requirements of electrical system components in demonstrator and commercial applications.
  • Support mechanical packaging and system design to support electrical/thermal requirements.
  • The engineer will work independently with limited supervision to evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria using knowledge and judgement to make adaptations and modifications.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned, needed, or required for the business.

Qualifications include:

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor's in electrical engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in a regulated design environment.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated proficiency in designing HV electrification systems that use batteries, motors, inverters, and PDUs with adherence to high voltage safety protocols.
  • Demonstrated experience in high current, high voltage DC power distribution unit design.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience debugging and building high-voltage DC power distribution
  • Skilled in electrical system modeling and simulation using MATLAB-Simulink, PSPICE, or LTSPICE.
  • Experience in packaging HV electronic components and interpreting electrical manufacturing documentation for commercialization support.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in designing and troubleshooting electrical sensors and controls.
  • Experience in circuit/schematic design tools
  • Experience designing and laying out various HV components in 3D modeling tools.
  • Proven experience in the design, release, and manufacturing of custom-manufactured electrical hardware components, such as busbars, ensuring build quality and production readiness.
  • Understanding of electromagnetic compatibility, compliance requirements, and industry standards.
  • Familiarity in designing, implementing, and troubleshooting communication networks like CAN, Ethernet, SPI, and I2C.
  • Familiarity with ISO 26262, UL Standards, and/or MIL specifications.
  • Highly collaborative personality with a willingness to learn and adapt.
  • Strong project management and leadership skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and positively with various stakeholders (internal and external), to address their needs promptly and to follow through on commitments.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong follow-through, entrepreneurial spirited, and a self-starting nature.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally (up to 10%) to engineering providers and hardware suppliers.

Role Classification and Working Conditions

This is a salaried, exempt-level position. This position typically works in an office environment; and given the nature of our business is also exposed to operations/warehouses/production environments.

Physical/Other Requirements

  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to travel, as needed, by plane, automobile, etc.
