- Graduation from high school or general education (GED); five years of experience or demonstrated ability in the installation, repair and maintenance of facilities requiring plumbing; or any combination of experience and training that would provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
- Extensive knowledge of the methods, tools, materials, and practices of the plumbing and mechanical trade and a complete knowledge of the terminology of the plumbing trade;
- Extensive knowledge of State, local and federal building codes relating to plumbing and mechanical installations and appliances;
- Knowledge of safety rules and regulations of the trade and the ability to comply with the rules and regulations
- Ability to read and write and to work from blueprints and specifications;
- Ability to use computers for work order processing, material ordering and communications;
- Skill in the application of methods, techniques and tools used in the plumbing and mechanical trade, including inspecting, repairing, and installing
- Must possess a valid Virginia Master's Card in plumbing work and a valid Virginia Journeyman’s Card in gas fitter
- Must possess a valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License
FOCUS: This is highly skilled trades level work in plumbing and mechanical involving a wide variety of installation, repair, and maintenance activities throughout the Pittsylvania County School System. The employee performs work under the general supervision of the Director of Maintenance and Facilities.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of all plumbing and mechanical facilities
- Requisition new supplies and tools, as needed, and maintain control of tools and supplies
- Estimate work order costs, both time and material, and prepare reports as required
- Work independently and exercise considerable judgment and decision-making regarding proper repair and proper plumbing methods to be used
- Act as instructor or lead employee, as delegated, in training less experienced employees in the proper use and operation of tools, materials, and techniques
- Install or assist in planning installation of new water or sewer lines to new facilities and the hooking up of new equipment; including: commercial water heater, boiler room equipment, ice makers and kitchen equipment; repair and/or install circulating pumps, flush valves, laboratory equipment, water fountains, toilets and lavatories
- Clean drainage lines, main sewer lines, and grease traps
- Respond to emergency duty assignments as required
- Perform design and calculation in accordance with the plumbing code and accepted engineering practice
- Perform all other duties as assigned
