SEWS Farmington Hills, Michigan Office. Although located at SEWS Farmington Hills Office, this is a Hybrid position, which combines both in office and off-site work. Associates are required to work at least three days in the office each week, but also have the flexibility to work off-site. Basic Purpose: Development of Wiring Harness components (protectors, grommets, connector holders, etc.) using 3D CAD systems (CATIA V5), release 2D drawings of components for quotation and for tooling kick-offs, and adjust the designs until part/project completion. Requires working with the Wiring Harness Engineers of each customer division (primarily Toyota and supporting Ford or Stellantis), internal Procurement, Validation, and QA departments, as well as external suppliers. Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Use 3D CAD to develop components for Wiring Harnesses; requires ongoing packaging studies to analyze vehicle fit, while maintaining required clearances from surrounding parts.
  • Create 2D drawings for developed parts using SEWS & Customer standards and release those drawings for production according to the prepared development schedule.
  • Follow component development and tooling schedules to assure that all milestones are met on time.
  • Work with Harness engineers to assess component needs and update designs throughout the vehicle maturation process (includes both online & in-person meetings which may require visits to customer sites).
  • Request quotes via the Procurement team, assist in the supplier selection process, and kick-off of tooling for developed parts.
  • Work with Suppliers (concurrently with Quality Department) to resolve any design or quality issues with the developed components, from tooling kickoff until mass production launch; includes visits to suppliers for production trials.
  • Work with engineers of Japanese parent company to facilitate localized tooling quotations, localized tool design sign off, and drawing submissions to customers.
  • Create DFMEA and DVP&R documents for developed parts in accordance with the requirements of each customer.
  • Maintain the library of standards of each customer and of Sumitomo, in relation to the scope of parts to be developed, and following those standards.
  • Prepare test samples, coordinate testing of components as required for each customer, and present the results to the customer engineering sections.
Qualifications:
  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
  • 1-3 years progressive engineering experience in Design.
  • Experience with 3D CAD systems (CATIA V5) and/or the development of injection-molded plastic parts or tooling is preferred; should be able to perform other engineering functions in addition to 3D CAD design.
  • Bilingual (English/Japanese) capability is helpful for liaison work with Japanese parent company.
