Position will supervise and directly work with the assigned Vance Bridge Maintenance Crew in the maintenance, preservation, rehabilitation and replacement of Department owned and maintained bridges, culverts, and pipes in Division 5. Position will also ensure a safe and well-maintained infrastructure at the specified level of service. Achieving these requirements involves inspection, scoping, assessment, planning, scheduling, and ordering materials, properly documenting and managing material inventory, and when needed, performing any of the work required to meet assigned objectives, and properly documenting all work performed to accomplish assigned objectives. Utilizing construction and maintenance techniques that adhere to NCDOT standards and established NCDOT practices is required in the performance of all duties.
Further, position will manage and maintain the assigned Bridge Maintenance office, facility, facility equipment, reconcile invoices, oversee contractors' work and inspections. In addition, position will apply and develop techniques to safely, effectively and efficiently implement maintenance, repairs, and conduct preservation and rehab projects. Position duties also include responsibility for all personnel administrative matters, supervising the assigned crew's daily tasks, reading and interpreting construction/repair plans, monitoring and reviewing daily work assignments, adjusting project plans to meet field conditions, planning, monitoring and ensuring safety standards are properly followed and documenting material inventory and equipment usage.
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience in bridge maintenance and repair, as well as bridge maintenance equipment operation
- Experience in operating a computer to perform job duties including but not limited to daily job reports, inventory, annual personnel reviews, receiving and sending daily job assignments to subordinates
- Experience in planning work and supervising a bridge crew
- Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices
- Experience inspecting bridges for minor maintenance needs
Additional Expectations:
Establish and maintain positive lines of communication with other workers, engineers, contractors and general public. Perform record keeping manually and electronically. Position will be expected to exert more than 100 lbs. of force occasionally, 50 lbs. of force frequently and 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Selected applicant will be required to work suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, over water, in water, in extreme heat and cold, during inclement weather and must traverse steep and uneven terrain. Selected applicant must have the ability to work nights, weekends and holidays as needed. Selected applicant will be working in the roadway or on the shoulder adjacent to the traveling public in heavy traffic at interstate speeds near heavy equipment while working safely and following instructions to complete tasks. Safety toe footwear is needed. Selected applicant is expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.
