INDUSTRIAL ELECTRICIAN 1
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is skilled electrician work at the full performance level in one of the City's water or wastewater processing plants, water pumping stations, a Public Property facility or at the Airport. Employees are responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of 13.2KV primary distribution equipment and the alteration, installation, maintenance and repair of electrical switchgear, equipment, and fixtures. The class is distinguished from other electrician classes by the on-going repair and maintenance of high voltage primary distribution equipment. Work in the Airport requires the application of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations to repair and maintain electrical equipment used to guide commercial aircraft and awareness of hazards inherent in an airport environment. Work in the Water Department and the Department of Public Property requires the application of safety standards to repair and maintain specialized equipment, which may be operated by digital and/or electronic instrumentation. Positions located in the Water department are also involved in the repair of equipment necessary for the proper operation of the plant. Work assignments are carried out in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), standard electrical practices, and general work instructions. Employees are supervised by an Industrial Electrician Group Leader or by a maintenance supervisor.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)
Positions must be responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical switchgear, equipment and fixtures.
Positions must work with high voltage primary distribution equipment.
Positions must be located in one of the City's water or wastewater processing plants, water pumping stations, Public Property facilities or at the Airport.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
ALL ASSIGNMENTS
Inspects, maintains, and repairs 13.2KV primary distribution equipment; uses ammeters, voltmeters, meggars, amprobes, statiscopes, strobescopes, hydrometers, and various multi-amp test sets; repairs and maintains switchgear and transformers from 13.2KV to 4.16KV; opens breakers at line and load sides; racks out the breakers and associated equipment; performs preventive maintenance by meggaring insulations resistance to ground; cleans contacts and checks connections for tightness; tests overload and concurrent relays; performs high voltage cable splicing.
Troubleshoots the circuiting and control wiring of Philadelphia Electric (PE) meters using PE's schematics. Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains D.C. storage batteries including lead acid and nickel cadmium and chargers used to trip out switchgear without power; repairs and maintains the wiring and controls of overhead cranes and outdoor hoist cranes.
Repairs and maintains battery powered industrial lift trucks, electrical gates, cranes and hoists, and other electrical equipment.
Troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs lighting systems and lighting fixtures.
Bends and installs conduit using a hickey and hydraulic benders.
May provide guidance and instructions to lower level electricians. May assign, manual tasks such as cutting wire, replacing fixtures and carrying tools to trades helpers and laborers; reviews work for conformance to instruction. Inspects a variety of electrical equipment such as heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems for operating efficiency; disconnects, disassembles, cleans, and repairs or replaces worn or damaged parts. Operates and uses a high-ranger bucket truck. May make estimates of time, money, and materials needed
