Position Summary

Perform maintenance and repair services on City vehicles and equipment; inspect, diagnose and locate mechanical difficulties; diagnose, maintain and repair electrical systems components; weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment; perform safety inspections on all City vehicles and ensure repair has been completed before vehicle is released from garage.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED; and

Two (2) years technical training in automotive maintenance and mechanical repair; and

To include one (1) year experience in minor and major automotive maintenance and mechanical repair on a variety of vehicles and equipment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a valid City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Possession of an AC recovery, CNG fuel and/or brake repair certification preferred.

Preferred Knowledge

  • Tools, equipment and procedures used in the overhaul, repair and adjustment of gas and diesel powered engines, repair and adjustment of brake systems, air conditioning systems and heavy tires
  • Basic procedures of preventive maintenance related to automotive, heavy and light duty trucks, trailers and construction equipment to include a variety of small and large powered tools such as power trimmers, mowing equipment and chainsaws
  • Maintenance related to herbicide application equipment, pumps and airless spray equipment
  • Fleet Focus maintenance software program
  • Safe work practices
  • Office equipment

Preferred Skills & Abilities

  • Learn operational characteristics of hydraulic systems
  • Learn methods, materials, equipment and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work
  • Learn operation and care of internal combustion engines and hydraulic equipment
  • Learn state laws regulating emission controls, brakes, and lamps
  • Learn state and federal laws regulating highway work zones
  • Perform routine equipment mechanic work including the diagnosing, trouble-shooting and repair of equipment to include pumps, herbicide applicators and airless sprayers
  • Use a variety of equipment maintenance tools and equipment
  • Maintain a variety of shop and repair records
  • Operate as variety of tire repair equipment in a safe and effective manner
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
