Position Summary: Eastern Illinois University is seeking candidates for full-time, carpenter who will perform carpentry work, repair the building contents of EIU, assemble furniture, shelving, installation of locks, doors, closers, hardware, exit devices and repair and perform other related duties pertaining to a journeyman carpenter. Basic nature of position - to provide professional skilled craftsmanship for the overall enhancement and needs of the University. Relationship of position with other crafts -to provide coordination between the carpenter shop and the other crafts (Laborers, Roofers, Electricians, Plumbers, Painters, Building Service Workers, etc...) Work coordination between the crafts is essential for the utmost in efficiency, cost effectiveness and productivity.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Install and maintain doors and hardware
- Understand the scope of a work order and determination of the materials needed
- Fabrication and erection of all building framework whether built from wood, metal or composition
- Installation of wall coverings including sheetrock, paneling, FRP, plywood, soundboard, ect.
- Install ceilings or repair existing ceilings
- Installation and repair all of flooring, leveling and floor prep of surfaces
- Build confinement areas for ACM removal and lead abatement
- Repair or construct cabinets
- Repair of windows
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of a recognized carpenter apprenticeship program or four (4) years (48 months) of full-time journeyman-level Carpenter experience (the trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by carpenters, millworkers, floor layers, and any other classifications encompassed within the scope of work included in these trade categories).
- As required by the position to be filled, current license/certification consistent with vehicles, machinery, and equipment that is routinely used in the general occupational area.
- Dependent upon institutional need, incumbents may be required to obtain job-related certification or license, such as a valid Illinois Department of Public Health intact floor tile abatement certificate. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of houses and buildings.
- Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, regulations and strategies to promote health and safety practices for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and other office procedures and terminology.
- Skill in time and resource management.
- Skill in personnel resources management through motivating, developing, and directing subordinates as they work, identifying the best skillsets for completion of the job.
- Skill in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
- Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
- Ability to operate personal computers with a general understanding of application software, and an understanding of the Internet.
- Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of one's arms and legs and moving one's whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, squatting, grabbing, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, stretching, twisting, reaching and handling of materials in the course of completing work assignments.
- Ability to stand and perform work duties for an extended period of time in the process of completing projects and/or assignments.
Work Hours
The core work hours of this position are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.
Summer Hours Monday - Thursday 6:30 am - 3:00 pm; Friday 6:30 am - 12:00 pm
Overtime and second shift are based off seniority.
Starting Salary/Pay Rate Range
A prevailing wage of $41.29 per hour
