TITLE OF VACANCY: General Maintenance/Painter - 261 Days

POSITION TYPE: Service

ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT: The West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)

LOCATION: Romney, West Virginia

Under immediate supervision - perform varied manual semi-skilled and skilled tasks in respective areas of responsibilities of the building, electrical, and mechanical trades in the construction, maintenance, and repair of school buildings and equipment. Responsible for various masonry tasks as assigned by immediate supervisor. Position may be utilized for general maintenance projects or emergency situations as required to meet department needs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will adhere to WVBE Policy 5902 - "Employee Code of Conduct" and the applicable WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance.

  • Carries and operates communication devices with established notification procedures, as requested.

  • Performs preventative and routine repairs to campus buildings and equipment including vehicles.

  • Maintains simple records and makes reports based on these records.

  • Performs painting/general maintenance work, individually, or as a team member for other projects.

  • Develops a materials list used for each job.

  • Inventories supplies and equipment and submits materials requests based on inventory level.

  • Must comply with shop and equipment safety rules and corrects any safety hazards as discovered.

  • Determine availability of machines, supplies, and materials.

  • Inspection of shop equipment and arrange for maintenance with direct supervisor.

  • Clean, prepare surfaces and paint various types of indoor and exterior surfaces of buildings and equipment.

  • Use various types of paints and coatings to protect surfaces or provide desired finish as required.

  • Conducts inventory of painting materials and other types of supplies and equipment.

  • Submits supply requests based on inventory.

  • Prepare cost estimates of labor, materials, supplies and equipment hours, as requested.

  • Cleans and maintains the work area leaving it in a safe condition.

  • Operates motorized equipment-snow plow, tractor mower, push mower, weed cutters, hedge cutters, chainsaw, etc.

  • Performs grounds maintenance or other general maintenance duties when assigned.

  • Assists with snow and ice removal operations on roadways and sidewalks so they can be made safe as soon as possible, which includes call-outs other than normal working hours.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or superintendent.

Pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-8:

"General maintenance" means a person employed as a helper to skilled maintenance employees, and to perform minor repairs to equipment and buildings.

"Painter" means a person employed to perform duties painting, finishing, and decorating wood, metal and concrete surfaces of buildings, other structures, equipment, machinery and furnishings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code 18A-2-5;
  • Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code 18A-4-8b; demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test), as required.
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code 18-5-15c and/or 18A-3-10, as appropriate.
  • Possess experience and/or training in any/or all job classifications identified within this job description.
  • Possess a valid state issued motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Physically able to do heavy, extensive lifting and manual labor.
  • Hold, or be able to obtain, licensures required by state or federal agencies in the performance of the position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, write, talk, hear, see, use technology such as computer and multimedia equipment, and use repetitive motions. The employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 50-100 pounds. He/she shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety, or judgement will not be tolerated.

COMPENSATION:

Based on WVSDB Service Personnel Pay Schedule , E Scale, commensurate with year of experience. 261-day annual contact.
