Job Summary

Under the direction of the Building Division Director, Building Inspectors perform inspections on commercial structures and residential dwellings to ensure that they meet or exceed current adopted codes. Position requires considerable field work consisting of site visits to works in progress and completed projects to ensure all construction strictly adheres to state codes and ordinances.

Building Inspector I - $55,000 State of Florida provisional licensure in two categories

Building Inspector II - $61,000 Standard license in one category

Building Inspector III - $67,000 Standard licenses in two categories

Building Inspector IV - $73,000 Standard licenses in all four commercial categories

Building Inspector License Categories: Commercial Building, Electrical, Mechanical and Plumbing

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts field inspections to verify compliance with Code requirements
  • Performs electronic, up-to-the-minute data entry of inspection results and comments
  • Counsels other inspectors on code changes and advises contractors of code changes/methods
  • Maintains professional licensing through the continuing education program
  • Conducts special investigations and makes court appearances as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Demonstrates four (4) years combined experience in the field of construction or a related field, building code inspection, or plans review corresponding to the certification category sought
  • State of Florida Standard Commercial Inspector Licensure (Preferred; must obtain provisional within six months of hire)
  • State of Florida Residential Inspector Licensure (Preferred; Must obtain provisional within six months of hire)
  • Must obtain full licensure before provisional licenses expire as a condition of continued employment
  • Valid Florida Drivers License with clean driving record

  • Thorough knowledge of Florida building codes and regulations
  • General knowledge of building plans, specifications and drawings, and ability to compare executed work against plans for accuracy
  • Ability to detect errors and code violations in building projects
  • Ability to perform detailed and professional inspections, and render valid opinions and decisions when necessary
  • Ability to enforce building codes, firmly and impartially
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with county officials, contractors, property owners and others to effect satisfactory compliance with specifications and standards
  • Ability to work independently in a professional and ethical manner while visiting sites to perform inspections

Employees may be required to perform duties, including the employees normal work function or other emergency support functions as deemed necessary by the County, as assigned before, during, and after hazardous weather or state of local emergency.

Working Environment and Physical Demands

Frequently move about the office to access files and office machinery. Constantly moves about outdoors and in construction environments to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances.

Frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer.

Frequently ascends/descends steep slopes and moves over uneven natural surfaces and in construction areas to facilitate inspection of building projects.

Frequently positions self to inspect all aspects of building construction including high precarious places, tight spaces, and low to the ground.

Must be able to perceive, inspect and assess plans, codes and ordinances as well as construction subject to inspection.

Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and perform on-site inspections at locations, including construction sites which may not be handicapped-accessible.

Frequently files plans weighing up to 25 pounds.

The position operates in both an indoor, office environment, subjecting the employee to possible exposure to dust and an outdoor environment subjecting the employee to possible to inclement weather, extreme temperatures, excessive humidity, pollution, fumes and airborne particles.

The noise level us usually moderate but may be loud at times.
