Project Overview:NASA is committed to landing the next humans on the moon and exploring beyond. This mission will help establish a lunar gateway to test and prove the ability to use technology to travel to Mars with the goal of establishing an outpost for lunar expeditions. Bechtel will assist them in achieving this important mission by constructing Mobile Launcher 2 (ML2). As the selected contractor, Bechtel will design, build, test, and commission ML2: a ground structure used to support the Space Launch System (SLS) Rocket.
Job Summary:This position is for a Senior Mechanical Engineer in the mechanical group associated with the NASA Mobile Launcher 2 project. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, can-do attitude, and a mindset aimed at resolving Construction and Commissioning-related issues in a timely manner.
In this position the engineer will support the installation and testing of Mechanical equipment on Mobile Launcher 2 as a Resident Design Engineer. Resolution and revision of impacted design documentation will need to be done in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements. The engineering will work with the client, partnering contractors, vendors, and other technical engineering disciplines in a team environment.
In this role, you will conduct field investigations to determine work scope and find resolution to problems. You will lead design, development, modification, and evaluation of mechanical components and processes. Your recommendations will resolve technical issues and ensure the unique and complex requirements of a projects mechanical aspects are met.
This role will transition into one which as-built documentation is produced for handover to the Client.
This is a short term assignment with an anticipated completion date of 7/31/2026.
Major Responsibilities:- Designs, develops, modifies, and evaluates mechanical components andprocesses utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), designstandards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs)
- Coordinates mechanical engineering efforts in assigned areas withspecialty groups, engineering disciplines, the client, vendor,contractors, construction and other functional groups
- When delegated, provides guidance to other mechanical engineeringpersonnel for specific tasks or projects
- Provides technical assistance to other mechanical personnel and willinteract with project functions, the customer, and third parties to resolve non-conformances.
- Provides assistance toproject and construction management inidentifying and complying with project mechanical requirements and inaddressing issues as they arise during project execution
- Mentors and assists more junior mechanical team members
- Reviews mechanical documentation and procedures for installationand maintenance
- Revises calculations to close out open assumptions to complete design
- Revises drawings and mechanical schematics (P&IDs) for as-built design
- Monitors schedule adherance and assure a high degree of quality in work product
Requires a bachelor's degree in Mechanical (or related) Engineering and a minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills:- Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to, P&IDs, calculations, and specifications for Mechanical systems and equipment.
- Must have knowledge of industry, codes, and standards (e.g. ASME B31.3), as well as Bechtel Corporate guides and standards.
- Must have worked in a Construction environment, either as a Field Engineer or supporting as a Resident Engineer resolving Non-Conformances and other Construction-related issues.
- Must have the ability to utilize office automation tools effectively.
- Must have a broad knowledge of the application of Mechanical engineering design principles.
- Must have experience working in facility piping, pneumatic and/or cryogenic design.
- Must have the legal right to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
- Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Registered Professional Engineer in USA
- Experience working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME-NQA-1.
- Experience including Government work.
- Experience using of Mechanical software tools for fluid flow analysis (e.g. AFT Arrow, AFT Fathom, PipeFlo)
