The Role: Network Field Engineer

As a Network Field Engineer at Switch, you will be part of a world-class team that operates in excellence, delivering mission-critical solutions that redefine whats possible in AI, cloud and enterprise data center needs. Your work will directly impact the future of technology and the sustainable growth of the Internet. In this role you will assist in engineering, planning, and installation of SWITCH OSP/ISP network projects to include design, development and coordination of conduit installation, fiber cable placement, and fiber splicing. You will also ensure the new/existing physical infrastructure is maintained, protected and documented.

What Youll Do

  • Uphold Switchs Karma philosophy leading with integrity and empowering those around you.
  • Work directly with Manager of OSP Network Operations in the day-to- day OSP/ISP Operations.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and perform housekeeping maintenance.
  • Develop detailed designs and schedules to oversee the installation, splicing, testing, and documentation of fiber optic cables ISP/OSP.
  • Maintain the security and maintenance of the OSP network, either aerial or underground.
  • Utilize a variety of systems for the processing and reporting of work activities, inventorying OSP POP facilities, documentation of restoration materials in stock.
  • Work with ROW rules and regulations for any new project, maintenance activities, and relocations.
  • Maintain fiber splice records, network topography records (KMZ/GIS files) and fiber mapping as-built drawings.
  • Work closely with Senior OSP Network Engineers during emergency restoration and mitigation activities required for all Switch OSP assets.
  • Perform critical functions within the network repair and restoration process when needed to restore network connectivity to all Switchs Customers on the Switch Fiber network.
  • Utilize industry standard cable test procedures and equipment for various cabling systems (OTDR, Network Analyzer, Visual Fault Locator).
  • Creation of design layout record (D.L.R.) for all installations within a web-based environment.
  • Provide world class customer service to all customers and vendors.

What You'll Bring

  • Ability to install network hardware such as switches, routers, wireless access points, microwave radios, servers, media converters and other telecommunications transport equipment.
  • Ability to install premise equipment throughout our datacenter and offsite facilities such as structured cabling, patch panels, wire management systems, PDUs, and other equipment.
  • An understanding of CAT 3, CAT 5 and CAT 6 as well as Single-mode and multi-mode fiber function.
  • Knowledge of rights of way (ROW) rules and regulations and working with municipalities on ROW access, permits, and encroachment permits.
  • Prior experience with installation, splicing, testing, and documentation of fiber optic cables ISP/OSP.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Possess proved problem solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively in team environments.
  • At least 3-5 years experience with fiber optic outside plant network design, installation, and documenting. Also, experience working in critical data environments (data centers, central offices, POP/ILA locations).
  • Certifications in A+, N+, Fiber Installation Certification, Confined Space Certification and Cable Manufacturer Certification.
  • Intermediate experience with Microsoft Office, Excel and Outlook, Microsoft VISIO, Bluebeam and GIS Systems.
