The Planning & Development Department (PDD) guides the physical development of the city by preserving our historic sites, planning what can be built where, and ensuring safe construction of buildings and infrastructure. A host of advisory and governing bodies of residents as well as elected officials provide oversight as the city grows and needs arise. The process is governed through development and enforcement of city codes and ordinances.

The Planning & Development Department currently has a vacancy for a Electrical Plans Examiner II in the Plan Review Division The role of Electrical Plans Examiner IIs is to review and examine complex electrical plans to ensure compliance with the City's electrical code and national standards. They will provide technical advice and assistance to architects, engineers, contractors, and field and office personnel regarding compliance, design corrections, and interpretation for complex electrical construction codes and plans. This role will also provide assistance at the customer service counter with electrical situations.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Performing simple engineering computations to analyze the installation of electrical components and equipment.
  • Responding to inquiries from reviewers, inspectors, architects, engineers, and others regarding electrical code requirements.
  • Evaluating tests and other data for suitability of electrical methods of construction or installation.
  • Identifying inadequacies found in electrical construction documents and specifications, and requires corrections be made to meet the requirements of City codes and engineering standards.

Opportunity to Underfill at the Electrical Plan Examiner I level.

Consideration may be given to candidates to underfill as an Electrical Plan Examiner I. Individuals that do not meet the minimum requirements below for the Electrical Plan Examiner II may qualify for the opportunity to underfill at the Electrical Plan Examiner I level. Candidates at both levels should apply to this recruitment. The Electrical Plans Examiner I will examine electrical plans to ensure compliance with appropriate City codes.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Knowledge of electrical code, construction codes, and City ordinances.
  • Knowledge of standard electrical construction materials and methods.
  • Ability to use professional judgement in application of code requirements.

SALARY

Electrical Plans Examiner II

Pay Range: $35.08 to $51.83 per hour.

Hiring Range: $35.08 to $47.01 per hour.

Electrical Plans Examiner I

Pay Range: $33.41 to $47.01 per hour.

Hiring Range: $35.08 to $44.01 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Electrical Plans Examiner II

  • Two years of experience examining and evaluating electrical plans for multi-story residential, tenant improvements, and small commercial projects to ensure compliance with the City electrical code, two years at the level of Electrical Plans Examiner I, supplemented by courses in electrical engineering

  • By the end of probation, must obtain both of the following:

  • IAEI Electrical Inspector/Plan Review

  • ICC Electrical Plans Examiner (E3)

  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted

  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.

  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Electrical Plans Examiner I

  • Three years of experience in electrical code enforcement including inspection of construction installation, supplemented by courses in electrical engineering.

  • By the end of probation, must obtain ONE of the following Certifications:

  • ICC Electrical Plans Examiner OR IAEI Electrical Inspector, Plan Review

  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.

  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience performing complicated engineering and math computations.
  • Experience reading, interpreting, or designing building construction plans.
  • Experience using construction permit software.
  • Experience with NEC and construction codes.
  • Experience with Electronic Plan Review Software.
