The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and storm water, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system's 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City. The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) currently has a portfolio of capital projects valued at $35B, and another $13.6B projected over the next 10-year commitment plan. The projects BEDC implements allows DEP as a whole to continue to operate and maintain an exemplary water supply system. Our In-House Design (IHD) directorate provides design and engineering services to meet operations' needs in a manner consistent with BEDC's core values of safety, schedule, quality, and customer service. IHD supports projects from the capital project initiation process through preliminary design, design, procurement construction, and finally with the turnover to operations. IHD's Design Services division includes Architectural, Site Civil, Structural, Process Mechanical/HVAC, Water Tunnel Mechanical Systems, and Electrical discipline sections. Each design section prepares design and construction documents including engineering plans and specifications for the construction of water supply, sewer, and wastewater treatment infrastructure. IHD projects are typically of the highest priority for the Agency. IHD's Engineering Services includes the Quality Assurance, Laboratory Services, Specifications/Standard Operating Procedures, Sustainability, and BIM/CADD sections. The Engineering Services division focuses on project's sustainability, resiliency, laboratory material testing, quality reviews and inspections, standardization of documents, project delivery standards and uses current BIM/CADD technology to streamline engineering design processes. BEDC seeks to hire an Environmental Engineering Intern to support the Process Mechanical/HVAC section, located in our Lefrak Office in Queens, NY. The Process Mechanical section is responsible for creating sustainable mechanical engineering designs for capital improvement projects that, in conjunction with other engineering disciplines, develop and shape DEP's public infrastructure, and assist in the continued operation and maintenance of exemplary wastewater pumping and treatment systems to protect New York City's public environment. In the Process Mechanical/HVAC section, the selected candidate, under supervision of a lead design or mechanical engineer, will assist in performing process mechanical engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility in the delivery of capital projects through the design phase with the preparation of engineering documents for process mechanical, HVAC, plumbing equipment needed within wastewater collection and treatment systems infrastructure and other miscellaneous facilities. The selected candidate may also assist in the construction phase of projects. Duties of the selected candidate may include, but are not limited to, assisting with preparation of contract drawings & specifications, design calculations and estimates for process mechanical, HVAC, and plumbing systems equipment such as large valves, piping, pumps, blowers, engines, hoists, fans, heat pumps, etc., and in developing and conducting field and shop testing of equipment as needed. The selected candidate may also engage in research, investigation, studies, or examinations related to the engineering functions such as operations, maintenance, repair and alterations of the wastewater collection and treatment systems. Additional duties of the selected candidate may include assistance in review of construction plans and may participate in the inspection of the mechanical system for the construction, demolition, or alteration to comply with the provisions of law, rules or regulations. PREFERRED SKILLS -Candidates must be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills and effective independent data analysis -Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to meet deadlines, prioritize and an ability to be flexible in assignment of work responsibilities -Ability to research, analyze, and report on technical issues under direction -Knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit and Microsoft Office Suite products (Word, Excel, etc.) -A Motor Vehicle Driver's License valid in the state of New York may be required for some assignments ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING INTE - 20616 Minimum Qualifications A baccalaureate degree in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering from an accredited college; or A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering technology and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in environmental engineering work. 55a Program This position is also open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a Program.
