Overview

The Electrician Apprentice is an entry-level electrical trainee enrolled in an apprenticeship program to learn the concepts and skills necessary to become a certified electrician. As an apprentice, an electrician will receive a combination of classroom education and paid on-the-job experience. Learn to perform routine and emergency electrical maintenance on all machines and equipment, diagnose source of problems or potential problems, and maintain or repair as needed.

Accountabilities

  • Ability to learn through self-directed study and desire for advancement.
  • Measure, cut, and bend wire and conduit, using measuring instruments and hand tools.
  • Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment and keep parts and supplies in order.
  • Perform semi-skilled and unskilled laboring duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment.
  • Disassemble defective electrical equipment, replace defective or worn parts, and reassemble equipment, using hand tools.
  • Thread conduit ends, connect couplings, and fabricate and secure conduit support brackets, using hand tools.
  • Drill holes and pull or push wiring through openings, using hand and power tools.
  • Clean work area and wash parts.
  • Strip insulation from wire ends, using wire stripping pliers, and attach wires to terminals for subsequent soldering.
  • Trace out short circuits in wiring, using test meter.
  • Transport tools, materials, equipment, and supplies to work sites by hand, hand truck, or heavy, motorized truck.

Qualifications

  • High School education or GED equivalent.
  • Enrolled in an accredited apprenticeship program.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (hard hat, earplugs, steel-toed boots, safety glasses at a minimum).
  • Operate or work in industrial conditions - may be warm/hot, dusty/dirty, noise, heavy machinery or elevated working surfaces (with proper safety training and safety protection).
  • Maintains cooperative working relationships, demonstrates a positive attitude and consideration towards fellow Team Members.
  • Ability to pass test and receive Journeyman Card upon completion of Apprenticeship program.
  • Must be willing to obtain own toolbox and electrical hand tools by craft.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to climb ladders or machinery, stoop, crouch, twist, kneel, crawl, and walk to access repair area while carrying or moving tools and repair parts, including overhead and floor-to-weight lifting of materials weighing over 50 pounds. #IND123
