JOB SUMMARY

The Fire Marshal, Building Inspector & Security Technology Office at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, is seeking an Assistant Building Inspection & Compliance Official or a Building Inspection & Compliance Official to support the Department with building code compliance. Reporting to the Building Official Supervisor, this position provides service to units at the University of Connecticut. This position serves as a primary resource for UConn project managers and outside contractors regarding all building code compliance questions, concerns, and inspections. Enforces the CT building codes and statutes for all new, non-threshold construction and renovation of existing buildings. Responsible for issuing the certificate of occupancy, affirming that a building is suitable to occupy.

This position will be hired at either the Assistant Building Inspection & Compliance Official classification or the Building Inspection & Compliance Official classification, dependent upon the incumbents experience, skills, abilities, and training as determined by the University. The Assistant Building Inspection and Compliance Official serves as an entry-level or early career professional who will work under more direct supervision and will serve as a resource, providing general technical advice. The Building Inspection & Compliance Official serves as a seasoned professional who performs duties more independently under direction and serves as a primary resource and authority on State and University building and fire code and statute compliance. The Building Inspection & Compliance Official will also be expected to handle more complex and unique situations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves under the direction of the Building Official Supervisor as a valuable resource on University building code and statute compliance.
  • Works collaboratively with various building project stakeholders, including project managers and architects, to review construction documents and plans.
  • Determines the necessity of design modifications in consultation with architects, project engineers, and construction personnel to avoid timeline delays.
  • Assists the supervisor in coordinating with design professionals, project managers, consultants, and contractors on optimal design strategies that would achieve building and fire code compliance.
  • Attends project meetings with UConn project managers and contractors. Provides advice on needed inspections based on the current work being performed.
  • Enforces the CT building codes and statutes by performing field inspections of ongoing work and tracking both routine and unique non-compliant issues through resolution.
  • Closes out construction projects. Reviews submitted documents, conducts final inspections, and reviews building code requirements. Issues certificates of occupancy based on building inspections for code compliance.
  • Possesses the authority to stop construction projects at any stage due to non-compliance.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • At the Assistant Building Inspection & Compliance Official level:
    • Possess and retain Assistant Building Official licensure from the State of Connecticut and four years of commercial construction experience, including one year as a licensed Assistant Building Official, OR
    • Possess and retain Assistant Building Official licensure from the State of Connecticut, an Associate's degree or completion of technical courses in construction, building, and/or fire codes or inspection principles, and one year as a licensed Assistant Building Official.
  • At the Building Inspection & Compliance Official level:
    • Possess and retain Building Official licensure from the State of Connecticut and eight years of commercial construction experience, including three years as a licensed Building Official, OR
    • Possess and retain Building Official licensure from the State of Connecticut, an Associate's degree or completion of technical courses in construction, building, and/or fire codes or inspection principles, and six years of commercial construction experience, including two years as licensed Building Official.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in building design and construction.
  • Experience with building codes, fire safety standards, and major trade areas relative to building construction and maintenance.
  • Understanding of basic engineering and architectural principles.

This is a full-time, permanent position.
