The City of Everett Motor Vehicle Department is currently accepting applications for a Student Day Laborer.

The Student Day Laborer will be actively enrolled in an accredited college and maintain a minimum of nine hours per week. The Student Day Laborer will work no more than 20 hours per week during the academic year and may work during one off semester or quarter per year between academic enrollments provided that notification by the student is provided in writing and the student was employed during the previous quarter or semester. Students may work more than twenty (20) hours per week during one off semester or quarter per year between academic enrollments provided that notification by the student is provided in writing and the student was employed during the previous quarter provide that the total hours worked in the calendar year shall not exceed 1040 hours. This job classification is represented by Everett Municipal Employees Local 113, AFSCME. No benefits are provided in this position.

NATURE OF WORK

Under guidance of shop personnel, typical duties of a student day laborer in the Motor Vehicle Department will include performing support work in servicing, repairing, maintaining, safety inspecting, and cleaning various forms of automotive, truck, and heavy equipment. This work includes assisting in performing many routine tasks of a mechanical nature in servicing automotive, truck, and heavy equipment with lubricants, fuels (gasoline, diesel, propane, and electricity), accessories, and parts. Under the guidance of an MVD employee, the student day laborer will assist with mechanical repairs and is responsible for general cleaning work in the garage. The student day laborer will be expected to possess basic automotive, servicing, and maintenance skills. Specific assignments are generally received orally, and the work is performed under the supervision of the shift supervisor or, when assigned, to another MVD Employee. Student day laborers are not required to make diagnostic evaluations or valve adjustments.

HOURS : Up to 20 hours per week, Monday thru Friday

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Under the guidance of shop personnel, student day laborers will do the following:

  • Assist with greasing, fueling, and lubricating automobiles, trucks, buses, and heavy equipment; inspect, repair, rotate and install tires; install, test, and service batteries, light bulbs, wiring, fan belts, radiator hoses, alternators, and other mechanical parts under the guidance of an MVD employee.

  • Assist with preventative maintenance minor tune-ups, including the replacement of spark plugs, PCV valves, hydraulic filters, air filters, distributor caps, rotors, fuel filters; and testing and changing differential, anti-freeze, and automatic transmission fluids under the guidance of an MVD employee.

  • Assist with servicing buses; check exteriors for evidence of accident or damage and check for low, flat, or scuffed tires; check bus interiors for vandalism and conditions that could injure passengers or tear clothing. Inspect and lubricate publicly used wheelchair lifts under the guidance of an MVD employee.

  • Assist with performing safety inspections on vehicles when scheduled for servicing, including visual and physical inspections; report any suspected or obvious problems that should be repaired or corrected, including checking brake linings, loose parts on the under body, loose suspension and steering components, leaking shock absorbers, and other cracked, bent, broken, or damaged parts under the guidance of an MVD employee.

  • Perform general cleaning work in the garage and keep records of the oil and fuel dispensed.

  • Move, park, and deliver vehicles as instructed.

  • Basic math skills and units of measure.

  • Use jacks, wrenches, pneumatic tire changes, grease guns, gasoline and diesel pumps, cleaning materials, impact air tools, hydraulic lifts, overhead hoists, battery testers, battery chargers, and other equipment used in servicing automotive, truck, bus, and heavy equipment under the guidance of an MVD employee.

  • Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

  • Accurately communicate complex work/job task details verbally and in writing.

  • Operate computers using current operating systems, relevant work applications, and related equipment.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other city staff, and the public.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid Washington State Driver License by date of hire.

  • Submission to a driving/accident records check.

  • Extensive background checks will be conducted with drug screening.

  • Hiring offers are contingent upon successful completion of a city-paid pre-employment physical.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITION S

  • Perform work requiring sustained lifting, bending, climbing, standing, and walking often on concrete surfaces; exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or move up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects; working in awkward positions and in cramped quarters; kneeling, crouching, and crawling; reaching, handling, fingering, and grasping requiring fine finger manipulations using both hands and arms; use of speech, hearing, sight feeling and sense of smell; and, eye/foot coordination.

  • The work can be performed outside under adverse weather conditions, also exposed to dampness, dust, dirt, rain, sleet, snow, and heat. The work may also be performed on road service calls and/or in inclement weather.
