Job Description
This role offers the opportunity to lead architectural projects from initial feasibility studies through construction completion, acting as a hands-on Junior Project Manager / Job Captain. You will take responsibility for project objectives, requirements, and budgets while motivating a small team, coordinating with consultants and contractors, and ensuring timely, high-quality delivery of commercial and institutional projects. The position is ideal for an experienced architectural draftsperson who enjoys being involved in every phase of a project and seeing work through to the final certificate of occupancy.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage architectural projects from initial feasibility studies through construction completion and handover of the certificate of occupancy.
- Oversee and guide a project team of approximately three to four people, providing clear direction, coordination, and progress updates.
- Share project responsibilities and coordinate closely with a Senior Project Manager when assigned to the same project.
- Take ultimate responsibility for the drafting, coordination, and completion of project documentation.
- Meet milestones and deadlines established by the project manager, proactively identifying and addressing potential delays or issues.
- Attend client and consultant meetings to represent the project team and ensure design and documentation align with project goals and requirements.
- Participate in construction meetings with the general contractor, helping to resolve design and documentation issues during construction.
- Oversee the project from design documentation through construction, ensuring consistency, quality, and compliance with codes and regulations.
- Develop and coordinate complete shell drawings and documentation for commercial buildings, both interior and exterior.
- Apply proficient knowledge of Building Codes and ADA requirements to ensure compliance for commercial uses.
- Navigate and coordinate with various agencies required to obtain full permits for commercial building construction.
- Work on a range of project types, including ground-up construction, interior build-outs, medical facilities, retail spaces, offices, schools, and strip malls.
- Incorporate relevant healthcare design standards, including FGI guidelines for outpatient facilities and Department of Health Article 28 regulations for hospitals, when applicable.
- Maintain a punctual, professional demeanor and communicate effectively with team members, consultants, and construction partners.
- Contribute to a hands-on, full-phase project approach where you remain involved from concept through completion rather than working on only one phase.
- 510 years of architectural experience, including running projects from feasibility through construction.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for architectural drafting and production of construction documents.
- Experience with construction documentation, design development, schematic design, and architectural design.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate multiple project phases and deliverables.
- Strong project management capabilities, including tracking objectives, requirements, and budgets.
- Proficient knowledge of Building Codes and ADA requirements for commercial projects.
- Proficient understanding of permitting processes and the agencies involved in securing full construction permits for commercial buildings.
- Ability to put together a complete shell package for commercial buildings, inside and out.
- Experience working on commercial project types such as medical facilities, schools, retail, office, and strip malls.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for interaction with clients, consultants, and construction teams.
- Professional demeanor and reliable punctuality.
- Ability to lead and coordinate a small project team of three to four people.
- Experience with healthcare projects, including outpatient facilities and hospitals.
- Familiarity with FGI guidelines for outpatient facilities.
- Knowledge of Department of Health Article 28 regulations for hospital projects.
- Proficiency with Photoshop for presentations and design visualization.
- Experience using Procore for project and construction management is a plus.
- Background in design-build environments and exposure to managing owned properties is beneficial.
- Comfort working in a multi-discipline, studio-style setting with close collaboration across roles.
- Motivation to be hands-on with all phases of a project rather than focusing on a single stage.
The role follows a standard schedule of 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with a half-hour lunch break. You will work within a collaborative studio-style environment alongside a team that includes directors, designers, architects, and draftspeople. The practice operates as a multi-discipline, design-build organization that manages its own properties and client projects, providing exposure to the full lifecycle of development and construction. Projects span ground-up construction and interior build-outs across sectors such as medical, retail, office, schools, and strip malls. Day-to-day work involves using tools such as AutoCAD, Photoshop, and Procore (where applicable), and collaborating closely with internal team members, consultants, and contractors in a professional office setting.
