Your Opportunity

Stantecs Water Practice is looking for a Senior Construction Inspector in the Greater Toronto Region. This role will work on medium to large challenging and diverse projects in a consulting construction management role that will require application of technical skills, project delivery, and leadership for construction projects. These projects consist of linear infrastructural projects such as watermain and sewer installation, as well as vertical projects such as Water & Wastewater Treatment plants and pumping stations.

This role requires expertise with the installation of CPP (concrete pressure pipe) on large diameter watermains including tunneling and will be expected to exercise independent judgment, expertise, and critical decision-making skills to determine work quality objectives. The successful candidate will bring strong understanding of linear conveyance projects, including a thorough understanding of construction project documents, relationships between various project parties, and quality and safety requirements typical for public construction projects and programs.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Provide single-point field inspection of the construction contractors work representing the Construction Manager in the field.
  • Daily monitor, inspect and document the construction contractors work and prepare a comprehensive written Daily Report that includes such observation and description of all work activities, measurement of installed material quantities, an accounting of labor and equipment resources utilized, a statement of general compliance or non-compliance with the work, and supporting video and photographs of the work in progress.
  • Communicate directly, both verbally and written, with construction contractors regarding conformance or non-conformance to standards, plans, specifications, and codes.
  • Ensure Contractor prepares prompt requests for information (RFIs) for questions that may affect the construction schedule. Review project submittals and RFI responses and incorporate into the quality control inspection plan.
  • Review, analyze and document any construction issues potentially resulting in a scope, time, or cost impact to the work of the Contractor which may result in a change to the contract.
  • Review and maintain master as built and record drawing information maintained by the construction contractor.
  • Attend, as necessary, Weekly Progress Meetings with Contractor, including review of progress to planned schedule.
  • Develop project specific quality control and quality assurance documents and standards for projects that are under development.
  • Ensure all field testing and inspections are done in accordance with the Contract Documents.
  • Document compliance and non-compliance with established quality control and quality assurance procedures.
  • Work with Construction Manager / Resident Engineer to implement methodology and criteria to resolve any non-compliance notices previously issued.
  • Review and submit all test reports for inclusion in turnover documentation to Owner.
  • Prepare written reports documenting QA/QC inspections, non-compliance notices, and corrective actions.
  • Observe, document, and approve of authorized Force Account change order work performed on a time and materials basis, documenting the use of contractor labor, equipment, and materials.
  • Review the monthly progress pay estimate submitted by the construction contractor to verify requests for payment of materials, percent complete, and earned value.
  • Prepare, monitor, and manage a project punch list for deficient or uncompleted work by the construction contractor.
  • Exercise initiative and independent judgement in adapting and applying procedures to address unusual situations and to resolve issues.
QUALIFICATIONS

Competencies, Skills, and Attributes:

  • The Senior Construction Inspector will work in a field office at a project site and will be required to work in a manner that ensures personal safety as well as the safety of fellow employees by following project and company health and safety guidelines and policies for planning and executing work in a safe manner. Field work may include exposure to elements including inclement weather.
  • Understand and interpret contract documents and assess plans for a designated Work Package for a specific construction activity.
  • Ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and contractors.

Education and Experience

  • Technical degree/diploma/certificate in the construction industry or equivalent in related field; or equivalent combination of education and construction experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience with large diameter watermain projects including tunneling.
  • P.Eng. or CET or NASSCO certification would be considered an asset.
  • ACAD skill, or other Computer Aided Design software skills would be considered an asset.
