Under the general direction of the Manager, Plant Services & Operations. Performs electrical installations, maintenance and repairs on related, building systems, and equipment in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, BC Fire Code and BC Building Code. Maintains electrical inventory, recommends system and equipment upgrades and replacements, and performs other related duties as required to ensure all campuses remain operational at all times. Public and staff safety is priority.
Functions and Duties
Installs, repairs, troubleshoots and maintains complex electrical distribution systems, motor control centers, switch gear, lighting systems, appliances, electric motors, solar PV systems, variable frequency drives and related control systems.
Works with programmable logic controllers and software systems that control lighting, machinery, complex building systems, intrusion security systems and card access.
Works with a variety of building management systems components such as electronic hardware and control logic. Troubleshoots repairs or installs new HVAC building controls. Involved with software configuration and programming parameters.
Performs scheduled preventative maintenance to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
Provides feedback to the Lead Electrician and Manager, Plant Services & Operations , plans projects and prepares material lists and cost estimates.
Maintains all campus fire systems and conducts annual inspection, testing, repairing, troubleshooting , verifying and maintaining accurate records in accordance with the current Canadian Underwriters Laboratories, National Fire Protection Association and the local municipal jurisdictions. The individual will be required to respond to emergency incidents related to electrical and fire systems.
Supports and maintains all Life Safety Systems such as emergency backup generators, fire alarm, chemical suppression systems, fire sprinklers, emergency lighting systems and is part of the fire drill coordination.
Keeps necessary system records such as log books, records and tool inventories. Addressing work order requests and providing technical support. Responsible for handling and processing cash for off campus transactions and completing monthly reconciliations. Is involved in planning strategies with Manager, Plant Services & Operations and the Lead Electrician.
Continuous ongoing training for all aspects of health and safety requirements. Can include to be certified in aerial lift, crane operations, fork lift certification, confined space, hazardous materials, arc flash, electrical safety, MSDS and electrical code requirements.
Recommends equipment and systems upgrading to Manger, Plant Services & Operations and the Lead Electrician. Maintains electrical inventory.
Communicates coordinates directly with administration, staff, students, local suppliers, contractors, Occupational Health & Safety, Technical Safety BC, local fire departments.
Reporting hazards and apply safe work methods continually, such as lock out procedures and work plans. Incorrect or inappropriate actions could result in significant safety hazards to the College infrastructure, staff, students, and faculty. It can also impact major delay to the daily operations of the College such as to classes and IT Services infrastructure. Reduced service can have significant financial repercussions.
This position is responsible to recommend and implement energy management strategies that reduce electrical utility usage and significant cost to the organization.
Frequent travel to all Okanagan College campuses to provide electrical technical support, system maintenance and repair.
Performs emergency and standby duties as required. Responds to urgent College situations such as power disruptions, fire alarms and IT Services main data center interruptions
Performs other related duties as required.
Education and Experience
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent plus completion of trades training to Electrical Journeyman status. Valid Class 5 driver's license is also required. Over 6 years progressive related experience.
Skills and Abilities

- Knowledge on computerized building management systems.
- Have efficient, safe work ethics.
- Knowledge of maintaining log books and tool inventory,

- A wide variety of electrical service skills is an asset.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in Energy Management projects would be an asset.
- Must be familiar with industrial / commercial older electrical systems and new modern state of the art technology.
Physical Demands:
- This position will require some heavy lifting and physical demands
- May have to work in confined spaces
- Working on ladders and platform lifts will be required
- Wearing personal protective equipment is necessary
- Working Indoors and outdoors.
- Working alone with limited supervision.
- Working at a worksite for any period of time as the only worker, where assistance is not readily available
Work Schedule:
- Work scheduled overtime and be available for emergency overtime when the need arises by responding to overtime call outs before and after standard scheduled hours of work.
