New Hanover County is looking for a Heavy Equipment Operator to join our Recycling & Solid Waste Department . This position operates a bulldozer and other various heavy equipment in a landfill environment.
The New Hanover County Landfill provides safe, environmentally sound waste diversion, recycling, and disposal services to county residents and businesses. In operation since 1981, the landfill was the first lined landfill in the state of North Carolina. The site also boasts an innovative constructed wetlands system for the treatment of landfill leachate as well as a double reverse osmosis wastewater treatment plant. All landfill liner systems are designed to exceed federal and state requirements. The site also provides for the convenient recycling of tires, appliances (white goods), yard waste, mixed recyclables, construction, and demolition debris, batteries, used motor oil, cooking oil, antifreeze, oyster shells, sharps (needles), and other materials.

- Cleans sites and remove debris
- Performs complex, regular preventative maintenance
- Troubleshoots and performs minor repairs on tools and equipment requiring welding parts, fabrication and equipment mechanical knowledge and skills
- Provides continuous customer service
- Maintains a safe environment for coworkers and the general public at assigned site.
- Performs work with regular and predictable attendance consistently meeting the scheduling needs as required by the county.
- Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Required Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent, and one (1) year of related equipment operations experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above
- The successful candidate will have extensive bulldozer experience.
- Grading experience is strongly preferred.
- Good organizational skills, ability to be a self-starter, and a positive attitude is a must.
- Additional requirements include experience in the operation landfill compactors, excavators, articulated dump trucks, front-end loaders, and motor graders.
- Valid Driver's License and good driving record required at time of application.
- Valid North Carolina Drivers License required by first date of employment with good driving record.
