Position Summary

The University at Buffalo's Office of Residential Maintenance Services is seeking a candidate to fill the Trades Specialist (Electrician) position. In this role, you will collaborate with a team of dynamic and diverse individuals and ensure safety of electrical and maintenance of electrical components across UB's North and South campuses. All the Student Life trades, and custodial staff work within UB's residential halls and apartments.

In a typical year, Campus Living houses up to 7,500 students at UB. Our skilled trades and custodial staff care for the buildings our students live in. Their priority is the health and safety of our students. Without dedicated cleaners and maintenance staff, the university would not be able to have a residential program.

Key accountabilities and responsibilities:

Trades Specialists (Electrician) may supervise and instruct others in the repair, maintenance, and installation of electrical systems and equipment.

May prepare wiring diagrams from verbal or written instructions to accomplish a project.

From plans, may recommend to supervisor the kind, quantity, and quality of materials to be used.

Assembles materials, tools and equipment required to accomplish the work according to plan.

Performs journey level tasks as required.

Gives verbal instructions and/or demonstrates proper method of performing electrical work and the use of electrician tools and equipment.

Observes and inspects the work while in progress and when completed to ensure that the is done properly and that electrical codes are followed.

Departmental Operating Needs

Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures is essential as well as a demonstrated commitment to following those procedures.

Since the activities of other employees depend on the availability of the employee in this position, reliable attendance is a factor that will be considered when filling this vacancy Due to the nature of the work, the incumbent must hold the discipline, motivation, and knowledge to successfully complete tasks independently with little to no supervision.

Professionalism is important as the incumbent may serve as a supervisor to designated staff; the incumbent will also encounter students, staff, and visitors throughout the workday; representing Campus Living in a positive manner is essential.

The incumbent must be able to demonstrate skills at a high level that are appropriate for the trade/position.

Minimum Qualifications

Non-competitive : Four years of full-time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a two-year electrician training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.

* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of C or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the- training.

Preferred Qualifications

This position requires traveling within the campus, between campuses and off-campus. A valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS is preferred or the candidate should otherwise demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Physical Demands

Routine tasks require light to moderately heavy physical effort. The ability to be in a stationary position, ascend/descend, position self to complete tasks, and work at elevated heights using ladders and scaffolds for extended periods of time is required
