MECHANIC II - TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT

Permanent Full-time 12-month position

General Statement of Job

Responsible for maintaining and repairing the school district's vehicles and equipment, including buses, trucks, and other machinery. This involves performing preventive maintenance, 30-day inspections, diagnosing and repairing mechanical problems, and ensuring vehicles and equipment are in safe working order.

Required qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; two-year degree preferred.
  • Experience in school bus maintenance operations preferred.
  • Must have strong diagnostic, technical and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of school transportation, equipment, applicable practices, and regulations preferred.
  • DPI inspection certification and CDL Class A driver's license with endorsements within six (6) months of hire date.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled maintenance tasks like oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid level checks.
  • Identify and fix mechanical issues, including electrical, brake, air conditioning, and engine problems.
  • Operates various tools and equipment, including lift jacks, tire changers, and air tools.
  • Maintains records of maintenance activities and repairs.
  • Follow safety protocols and wear appropriate safety gear.

Additional duties

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Available for potential emergency repairs or breakdowns.
  • Travel between schools to perform repairs.
  • Take additional training/classes when needed. Most are supplied in house.
  • Fill in for the fuel truck driver if needed. Which requires filling fuel as well as checking all fluid levels, checking tires, missing lug nuts, or leaking wheel seals. Check that key is out of ignition, air pressure is drained and record vehicle mileage.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as required by the Transportation Director and/or Transportation Assistant Director.

Essential knowledge and abilities

  • Must be physically able to operate mechanical equipment. Must have a minimal level of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Ability to follow instructions and perform medium physical work.
  • Ability to lift and/or move 50 pounds.
  • Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
  • Requires the ability to read simple forms and prepare maintenance reports using prescribed format.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments.
