UM Housing invites applications for a Journeyman Painter for the University Villages.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performing skilled painting on interior and exterior surfaces, furniture finishing, wall vinyl and tile repair, tape and texture, window glazing
  • Responsible for supervising summer crews.
    1. Train crews to operate equipment and safety procedures, schedule jobs, supply product, work with the crews and inspect completed work.
    2. Other duties related to painting.
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Ability to exercise sound judgement and maintain a safe work environment
    • Knowledge and ability to provide quality customer service
    • Ability to establish multi-level verbal and written communication with co-workers, contractors, student organizations, trade workers, staff and visitors as necessary
    • Good knowledge of the standards practices, methods, processes of materials, tools, and equipment of the trade
    • Good knowledge of the properties and use of the paint, varnishes, shellacs, filters, epoxy and painting materials
    • Knowledge of preparing wood, metal, plaster, drywall, and other surfaces painting
    • Being able to operate a sand blaster, paint sprayers, compressors, vacuums, power tools, paint mixer and shaker and any other hand tools related to painting
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
    • Strong communication skills including the ability to write clear and concise reports and correspondence
    • Drywall tape and texture experience
    • Work with chemicals, dust, fumes and odors associated with environment
    • Work from heights, ladders, scaffolding and high-range lifts
    • Work under indoors and outdoors conditions
    Physical Requirements
    (Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.)
    • Lifting: Ground to 36 inches, up to 60 pounds. Ground to overhead, up to 5 pounds, both hands.
    • Carrying: One handed, carry up to 60 pounds for 50 feet, and upstairs.
    • Carrying: Two handed, front carry, carry up to 60 pounds for 100 feet.
    • Pushing and pulling forces required (when moving equipment and office furniture): 60 pounds sustained.
    • Static trunk forward bending and twisting from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while painting, laying floor tile, and repairing walls and floor...
    • Reaching with both arms in all directions, including overhead, frequently.
    • Perform one handed overhead work, such as plastering, with 5 pounds tool.
    • Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder or scaffold.
    • Standing and walking on various distances throughout the day, on even and uneven surfaces.
    • Manual steadiness, dexterity, speed, and coordination:
      1. Arm-Hand Steadiness The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
      2. Manual Dexterity The ability to quickly move your hand, and your hand together with your arm, to grasp and manipulate painting tools.
      Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment . Additional Information

      Position Number: 107900
      Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, 12 months/year
      Probationary Period: Six (6) months minimum
