JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Water Pollution Control Authority Executive Director or designee, performs a variety of skilled mechanical, maintenance, corrective and preventative maintenance tasks in the operation of the wastewater treatment facility and collection system. May be required to work on different shifts; does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Maintains, repairs, and adjusts various equipment components and mechanical assemblies of pumps and pumping equipment, cranes, aerators, clarifiers, thickeners, pump station pumps, compressors and other mechanical equipment in the wastewater treatment plant and sanitary and storm pumping stations.
- Performs preventive maintenance on mechanical equipment, including cranes, aerators, clarifiers, thickeners, pumps and pumping equipment, compressors and other mechanical equipment in the wastewater treatment plant and sanitary and storm pumping stations.
- Performs repairs; checks, inspects, calibrates and reconditions various equipment components and mechanical assemblies; lubricates and adjusts equipment as required
- Utilizes computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to perform scheduled maintenance and preventative maintenance work.
- Enters work order daily into the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Checks, cleans, and maintains sewer lines and operates sewer cleaning equipment, including TV inspections equipment, flushing and vacuum units.
- Investigates, evaluates and coordinates sewer lines rehabilitation.
- Examines and investigates City sewer lines for issues / problems in the City Right of Way (ROW).
- Evaluates laterals for damages and coordinates with construction companies to perform the repairs as needed.
- Observes new sewer connections after WPCA permit approval and during the capping of sewer lines.
- Reviews sewer maps and sewer lines history to identify problem areas.
- Aids utility companies, including electrical, gas, water and any other vendor with needed access to the plant and pumping stations.
- Arranges and completes dye testing; reports findings to management and billing.
- Performs various building and grounds maintenance tasks together with general plumbing and heating work; performs general housekeeping including, but not limited to, cleaning, painting, grass cutting, etc at the treatment facility and pumping stations.
- Assists in keeping accurate maintenance and inventory records.
- Performs emergency repair work when necessary.
- Responds to plant and pump stations emergencies after normal work hours-nights, weekend, and holidays.
- Operates plant vehicles and mobile equipment, including fork lifts.
- Inspects, maintains, and properly uses assigned hand tools, power tools, and safety equipment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES
- Ability to use a computer and knowledge of computer based programs and software for spreadsheets and word processing;
- Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions of the mechanical trade;
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and outside contractors as required;
- Ability to effectively communicate conducive to maintaining optimum working relationship;
- Ability to read and interpret blue prints and technical drawings;
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions;
- Ability to maintain accurate records and create standard reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited high school (or possession of a high school equivalency certificate) and two (2) years of progressively responsible mechanical or maintenance experience; one of which must include repairing and maintaining pumps and pumping equipment, heavy machinery, electrical or hydraulic equipment at a wastewater treatment facility.
Other Necessary Requirements
At time of appointment, possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), successful completion of one (1) year of employment with the City of Stamford in the classification of Mechanic-in-Training - WPCA and a CT Grade II Collection System Certification.

A written examination will not be administered for this position. Instead, candidates will be evaluated through a comprehensive review of their education, professional knowledge, and demonstrated experience as it relates to the responsibilities and qualifications outlined in the job posting.
