The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking an Assistant Traffic Design Engineer to join the Olympic Region Traffic and Transportation Operations Office to lead, direct, and manage the Regions traffic program. This role supports the agencys commitment to zero fatal and serious injuries and a sustainable, integrated multimodal transportation system. Utilizing sound engineering judgment, this position serves as the Regions Assistant Traffic Design Engineer and is responsible for providing leadership, direction, support, management, and engineering oversight for the Regions planning and project development and construction activities as they relate to Traffic: safety, operational efficiency, managing demand, traffic analysis, work zone traffic control, signing, intelligent transportation systems, signal and electrical systems, and illumination. They also manage the Regions established capital program and supports delivery in conformance with applicable policies and department expectations for customer service, transparency, and accountability.

This position directly supports the agency strategic plan and goal areas by leading a workplace that supports and promotes training and development for professional growth and upward mobility, creating, influencing, and fostering a physically and psychologically safe workplace where all employees feel that they belong, and ensuring, through adherence to WSDOT policies, that the maintenance and preservation of assigned roadways and assets are administered to the expected quality, safety, and stewardship standards to support Washingtons long-term resilience.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant Traffic Design Engineer will:

  • Provide leadership, direction, support, management, and engineering oversight of the Region Traffic Design programs related to Design-Build (DB) or Progressive Design Build (PDB).
  • Assist the Traffic Design Alternative Delivery Engineer in managing project schedule, budget, and professional staff involved in traffic design, analysis, construction work zone strategy, and other traffic related work.
  • Review project development documentation and design approvals.
  • Provide guidance to subordinates regarding design standards, practices, documentation, and career development, and establish policy for standard operating procedures within the office.
  • Provide technical expertise, guidance, decisions on complex traffic related issues on traffic design, traffic analysis and modeling, safety analysis and recommendations.
  • Represent WSDOT on multi-jurisdictional teams and task force groups.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required :

  • Possess a Washington State Professional Civil Engineers License; License holders from other states will be expected to obtain a WA State PE license within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Two (2) years of Project Management experience in Traffic Design, Design, and/or Traffic Operations or closely related field.
  • Experience in effective use of computer software and hardware to plan, manage and deliver engineering solutions.
  • Demonstrated leadership competencies to lead and supervise a diverse workforce; work across boundaries; build and maintain effective teams; coach, mentor, and train; and encourage employee engagement.
  • Advanced understanding of engineering principles, practices and methods and the ability to apply them to complex engineering problems to ensure compliance with established standards and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and deliver multiple projects on increasing complexity involving a variety of resources, support groups and entities.
  • Experience in reviewing engineering plans and specifications for compliance with established standards.
  • Advanced presentation skills to communicate information effectively and professionally to a diverse audience, including those with non-technical backgrounds, both virtually and in-person, using a variety of electronic media, including, but not limited to telephones, email, text, video conferencing, and computer conferencing.
  • Proven skills to examine, develop, and propose alternate solutions to complex elements of a project.
  • Experience in being able to effectively work both individually and within a diverse team environment.
  • Experience adhering to safety policy and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
  • Experience in working independently, prioritizing workload, and managing multiple assignments.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Bachelors degree in civil engineering or closely related field
  • Masters degree in civil engineering Traffic Engineering emphasis or closely related field
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in such areas as construction, design, operations, and maintenance of highways, bridges, and related structures.
  • Three (3) years of demonstrated and progressively responsible supervisory/managerial experience.
  • Experience supervising public sector employees in a union environment.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements .
